Any issue with using VMWare 6.5/6.7 encryption for virtual servers with 10gbps iSCSI Equalogic and Compellent SAN’s?

  1. As eamon45 said, dedupe and compression will be impacted.. Initial encryption of the VM’s might be slow as you have to read each chunk of VM data, encrypt it and then write it. But once that’s done, from a storage standpoint, things should be about the same. All the encryption is done by the CPU.. You’re not “writing extra bits”, just encrypted bits.

VM Encryption is datastore agnostic. VSAN, NFS, iSCSI, FC, etc.. Doesn’t matter. The I/O from the VM is encrypted before it reaches the storage subsystem of the hypervisor.

  2. I would also say to expect to loose the space saving for the virtual drives. As in if you only had 2 gigs on a 100 gig vm drive it would only take up 2 gigs of drive space on the compellent plus any snapshots. Now it should take up the whole 100 gigs.
