Building a compute heavy farm

Hi, I am building a compute farm made up of Centos 7 VMs which will be running physics simulations. I tried to do some research but did not find too much info on my question. Here it goes, I am wondering which would be better more vms with fewer cores, or less vms with more cores or does it not make a difference. In either situation the same amount of cores would be used just spread out among more or less vms. There are 4 esxi hosts that they would be spread out among. Any suggestions or whatever is welcome.

  1. For any compute-intensive application you’ll want to forego the virtualization and go bare-metal. Lower CPU core does have faster clock speeds, which you’ll want. The HPC application you are working with probably has a “degrees of parallelism” published somewhere.
