Cannot update single host esxi if vcsa is a vm in it?

Have 6.5

VCSA always fails to enter maintenance mode when trying to apply updates. My guess is because there is no cluster or other ESXI to migrate to? How do I disable HA on this host if there is no cluster, am I able to update this esxi with vcenter?

  1. Enable SSH access to your host.
You have to shutdown all VMs. Full stop.

This is how it’s worked for me:

esxcli software sources profile list -d https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml | sort -d

That gets the list of available updates.

    esxcli software profile update -d https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml -p ESXi-7.0b-16324942-standard

    That performs the update.

*Generally*, I pick the latest “-standard” version (for whatever version you’d be running… i.e. 6.0, 6.5, 6.7, 7.0). However… *do your own research* on which ones you want to get, and what the options are.

    EDIT: added clarification

  2. I don’t think there’s a way to do this with just a single host. You’d need to shutdown or migrate any VMs running on the host in order to patch it and if you do that you don’t have vCenter anymore. Best option would be to manually patch the ESXi host.
