Empty SSD after mistakenly ‘Mapping the Virtual Disk’.

Hello redditors,

today i most likely f-ed up. I wanted to expand the size of my Virtual Machine, and afterwards VMware showed the message ‘you must repartition the disk’. I didn’t understand what that meant, and for some reason i clicked the ‘Map Virtual Disk’ button and i picked my 1 TB SSD with all my project files and virtual machines. After undoing this operation, my disk was not showing up in the windows explorer.

In the Disk Management window, the drive was not allocated and i had to reformat the drive to use it. Now the drive is empty, and i’ve tried some recovery tools but none of them seem to find anything… Is my drive completely wiped?

Any help is appreciated!

  1. Sounds unfortunate, but yes partitions are wiped. I would try reach out to a disk recovery company. These are very expensive however.

  2. I don’t have the book in front of me (traveling for work) but there are a number of tools you can use to restore partitions and recover files from SSD. Don’t touch your system for now until you have a plan. Mucking around now might kill some of your files and destroy your chances. Do some googling for how to restore partitions deleted in VMware and you’ll probably find a few tools pretty easy. If I didn’t have a meeting to be in shortly I’d help you look, sorry. Good luck to you.
