Fixing Guest Linux VM after upgrading kernel ?

I upgraded an Ubuntu Guest to Kernel [4.4.0.219](https://4.4.0.219) to generate kernel debugging symbols on workstation 15 and I can not get the new kernel to boot properly. Looking around it has something to do VMTools but the only solution documented ( [https://www.vmware.com/support/ws5/doc/ws_install_vmware-config.html](https://www.vmware.com/support/ws5/doc/ws_install_vmware-config.html) ) is deprecated as [vm-config.pl](https://vm-config.pl) does not exist on my system.

I imagine there is a way to do this, just need to know how (I’ve had zero issues with this on virtualbox in the past).

  1. Yes `vmware-config.pl` is long gone. These days most folks just use open-vm-tools (`sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools`) with VMware Workstation. Assuming you can’t boot at all, can you see where it’s failing during kernel initialization? Are you getting a kernel panic?
