How to install MacOS Mojave into vmWare Fusion?

My Mac is currently running Mojave (10.14.6). I’m running VMware Fusion Pro v11.5.6.

I want to create a VM running Mojave, so I can upgrade my real Mac to Big Sur when it comes out. How do I do that? I don’t think there’s a Mojave blob out there that I can just install into the VM.

If it matters, I currently have a VM running El Capitan (10.11.16).

  1. Two options:

    1. Older versions of macOS are still available from the App Store if you have a direct link. Try this: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-mojave/id1398502828?ls=1&mt=12 You can then drag the downloaded installer onto the new VM wizard the way you would with an ISO file.

    2. The new VM wizard has an option “Install macOS from the recovery partition” that may work. This is the easiest way, but in my experience it often fails immediately.
