Load balancing incoming traffic

Hello everyone. I’m a newbie here and seeking for help.

Currently I have a vSwitch with one VM and two physical nics connected. The things is that I’m receiving traffic from both nics to the VM but I can only see traffic from one nic.

Both nics are connected to Cisco Switches on the other end using vPC. I’ve read that I need a VDS but unfortunately I don’t have the Enterprise license. So don’t know if there’s something else I can do or Can I only accomplish this with a VDS?

  1. Not quite sure what your end goal is for this. You can set the nics to active active and it will load balance (in a basic sense) utilizing both nics.

    If you need two nics for some other reason. Just add one to the VM.

  2. if it’s that important, you could dedicate 2 physical nics on the host (both set as active) for that vm, add 2 virtual nics (1 for each physical one) and aggregate them in the vm – ex. for 1gb nics you will get a total of 2gb when aggregated and also a failover if 1 link goes down

    this is not a load balaced solution, just has more bandwidth and it will work with any vsphere license

    for load balancing you will need either a hardware solution or you could do it with nsx in virtualization, but the costs will be high

  3. It it’s Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) you are referring to, yes you need the Enterprise license because only vSphere Distributed Switches can do that. With Link Aggregation Groups (LAG’s) you should be able to aggregate bandwith on more physical NICs.

    But as the rest said, it’s not quite sure what OP means.

    Without vDS there isn’t really much you can do except the suggestion below to bundle them from within the GuestOS. That should do the trick. Normal vPC’s wont give you double the bandwidth unfortunately.

  4. Inbound load balancing can’t be done in the host – it’s too late at that point. You may want to check the switch hashing settings and /or find out what’s causing the load and move it to a separate (passive) nic.
