N00bish question

Hey guys… Quick question: Currently the SSD in my new home computer is split into two partitions – 350GB (for simplicity… W10 on /sda1) and 650GB (/Data… /sda2). Never having installed ESXi before, if I back-up data from /sda1 to /sda2 and then delete /sda1… Can I install ESXi there? Looks like ESXi should take under 4GB of space, which would leave me over 340GB for W10 and CentOS VMs… or does the installer want a total clean-slate to work with?

Also, one page on The Internet suggested that ESXi needs some kind of swap file and of course that’s tough on SSDs. Value-added for me to put a cheap hard disk in this box?

The rest of the setup is a new Ryzen 5 3600 (6 cores) w/ 32GB of RAM on a B550 motherboard. The internet seems divided on how good of a setup this sort of thing is, and also divided on whether ESXi will natively see the on-board LAN port, audio, & etc.

Any show-stoppers here? Thanks much.

  1. It looks like you’re planning to hist a Windows 10 VM when done. If that’s the case, I would recommend you *not* install ESXi, but Workstation. This will work better as a desktop hosting solution. The big difference is that Workstation is a type 2 platform designed to run on top of another OS. ESXi is a type 1 platform that is, itself, an OS.

  2. No, ESXi will use the entire disk, afaik there’s no way to use custom partitions during install. But pretty much everyone runs it out of a USB flash drive or SD card, there’s absolutely no reason to install ESXi on an HDD/SSD.

    The swap file you mentioned is the scratch partition, it’s basically just a folder full of logs and on USB installs it either goes to the first available datastore (if you have any available) or you’ll have to manually configure its location later, but that’s a very simple task. It should not be in the USB drive itself because it’s a very active folder and it will greatly decrease the drive’s life.
