Safe to go two 1 core vCPU’s for VCSA build?

Prepraaring to build out a VCSA 6.7 VM to migrate from 6.0 vCenter for Windows — should I spec out…

A) 2 sockets w/ 1 core per socket (2 total threads)

B) 2 sockets w/ cores per socket (4 total threads)?

I’m aware that VMware’s published *requirements* are A. This is a relatively small work place lab environment. 20-ish VM’s on average + 3 ESXi hosts (total of 12 CPU’s, Intel Xeon E5-2620 @ 2.00 GHz + 128GB RAM)

  1. Why wouldn’t you just follow the wizard and let the installer creat the guest before it installs photon and the vcsa into it?

    If you create a non-standard guest it might affect performance in unknown ways and you won’t easily be able to compare to the standard vcsa performance documented online.

  2. Vcsa deploys by default “wide and flat” aka 1 core per socket, I don’t think it matters

    With Windows and multithreading it certainly makes a diff but I’ve always assumed vcsa is agnostic due to its default deployment sizing.

  3. Deploy with the smallest config (‘Tiny’) in the deployment wizard. This deploys a 2 vCPU instance. In a lab environment, you can later trim down the memory allocated to the vCSA if you’d like. My homelab vCSA runs decently (though sometimes a bit sluggish) with 5 GB of RAM allocated. The normal ‘Tiny’ deployment includes 10 GB of RAM.
