VMWare Player 15 throwing error message on importing OVA I just created!

This is an odd little issue that isn’t fatal, but I’d like to get to the bottom of it for my own knowledge’s sake.

I’m running Player 15.5.1 (the latest version), and wanted to make a copy of a newly-created VM. Of course Player doesn’t include snapshots, so I went to ovftool.

$ovftool <source-path/vmachine.vmx> <destpath.ova>

Works like a charm!

Then when I go to import the VM to player 15 – the very same instance that it came from – it tosses up this error:

“Import failed because .ova did not pass OVF specification conformance or virtual hardware compliance checks”

It lets me ‘relax’ the conformance checks and retry, at which point it loads and starts without a problem. However, I’m curious about why it’s creating a file that it considers to be an error.

Anyone got some clever insight?
