“Ecotricity NZ”

The BYD Seal is finally hitting the New Zealand and Australian markets and Gav was lucky enough to take a Performance model for a blast to look at its features, functionality and (of course) performance!

While crossovers and hatchbacks may rule supreme on our roads, this new electric car looks…

  1. In fact, in order to avoid running into the Antitrust law, BYD was litrally forced to double their sale price for all cars out side china. So if you can somehow get a BYD in China and drive it back, you can truely save a lot.

  2. The big problem with this EV is the 2.2 tonnes it's got to heft around. If you compare that to the 1.8 tonnes of a Model 3 (which is still at the upper end for a 4 door sedan) and you look at the efficiency and charge speeds, I think the Seal is just not a great EV. Efficiency is king when it comes to EVs. Over a 300km trip you're going to use 12kWh more electricity than a Model 3 – so it's going to cost more to run and take longer to charge. Good video though Gav.

  3. Gavin Shoebridge really is NZ answer to Jack Scarlett. Witty, entertaining, inventive similes “changes direction faster than a teenager’s mood swings” “sticks like a stain on a white shirt”. I’m using those 🤣. Also superbly razor sharp editing. Ecotricity, this guy deserves a raise! (Or at least a Seal Performance company car) 😁 Also will ecotricity ever branch out to Australia? We need that kind of renewable energy.

  4. Great review. One of the best looking cars I've ever seen. As someone who lives in a country with limited EV choices, Canada, I may have to move to NZ!

  5. After my trip in China, I was wondering why people are still buying Tesla there. They got tons of choices with better configurations than Tesla. At least, I would not buy it there…

  6. The issue is they are CHINESE. They aren't miraculously cheap for no reason. They are cheap because of dubious labour practices, dirty environmental policies based on a coal economy and subsidised by a communist regime. The sooner we wake up to the fact we or our children will ultimately end up paying the price of your cheap BYD car compared to a car made in a more socially responsible country the better.

  7. Definitely prefer this to the Model 3. The charging (and I imagine software) isn't as good, but that's only a problem on the occasional road trip.
Tesla deleting the buttons, stalks, and refusing to add a HUD are much bigger issues IMO.
Also yes, love sedans, sick of the SUV trend. Though I wish we had more wagons/model-s style hatchbacks.
