At risk of sounding like the asshole, I don't really buy this particular story. I understand ecological activism, but this area of it feels a bit far radical at first blush. I'll reserve forming any real opinion one way or the other on the matter until I hear more about it.
so Barron's stance is "lets clean up the ecosystem by destroying the ecosystem". Sounds legit…🤦
I always LOVE (and dread) the moment where John Oliver turns into Dr. Ian Malcolm and reminds Us (the World) why we SHOULDN’T do these kinds of things… Thank you, John.
@6:15, "our resource sits on…."
So it's already his.
Like if Elon said, "my Red planet will have the best space coasters."
I like how he talked about a pacific part of the specific ocean
God this is so depressing
How can we expect neo-colonizers to care about sea creatures when they happily kill millions of humans for profit?
4:35 black Joe Biden 😂😂😂
Well, in a culture where short-term profit is literally the ONLY thing that matters, this is inevitable.
We're more and more ready to destroy the planet we're living and few people to get more money into their pocket. Nice.
I wouldnt support any chinese innovation. Salt batteries? Is that why chinese EVs are catching fire dozens a day for months on end? Why they are confiscating EV bikes and scooters in massive raids with hundreds of police at night? Nothing china innovates should be trusted without significant western review and confirmation.
A new day, a new unspeakable horror that will make the world unlivable for generations to come.
Can you believe those evil Republicans didn't want this wonderful branch of the Great UN that gave us good results such as Ukraine/Russia and Gaza/Israel. Just let the UN do what they want, they are working as intended.
That Reagan joke almost put me down there with him 😂💀 thanks for adding to the list of reasons i won't be getting into heaven
I knew that good thing that Reagan did was coming a mile away when he said "In 2004…" but I still loved the concluding line just as much.
Aliens won't respond to the messages we shoot out in space, so we're gonna dredge up their turf…. 😐 great idea. They're gonna swim up and exterminate us like a pesky ant problem. 🖖
The planet will be a lot better off when we humans exit the stage, just sayin'.
The nodules are a life. The nodules must flow.
When I rebuild batteries,After desulfating with baking soda I use 12 ounces of epsom salt to 1 gallon of water to replace the battery acid and then charge until volts are regained. This sometimes takes 24 hours.Salt in batteries is not new.
The Law of the Sea Treaty is not the answer… There are national sovereignty issues at stake. And yeah, I think you're generally right about problems with deep sea mining.
I cant even watch this till the end! it makes me ungodly angry that a million years old ecosystem could get wiped out for the profit of one ONE fucking stinky human. There are other minerals to build batteries with much less impact on the environment sodium ion batteries for example.
Why TF would a room full of Americans break into applause over the mention of the death of one of our presidents?? That's despicable!
Also, as always, another episode of John "proclaiming some kind of thing to be a devastating problem while not providing any sort of solution" Oliver in the can. Wonderful.
Good on you for spotlighting an important issue worthy of attention. 👍 Unrelated to the topic, but I kind of miss the days when comedy didn’t prompt the automatic reaction of, “Okay, what global catastrophe and impending doomsday failure are we discussing today?”
where can I see the whole thing?

Australia sent people to some other island they used as a detention center? Who would DO that???
Would you trade a deep sea vacuum bringing an undiscovered starfish to extinction in exchange for not having to eat bugs instead of cheeseburgers?
This season's episodes have been stressful (but educational) at times. But for some reason this one gave me existential dread on top of my existential dread.
As a lawyer, I see this man G. Barron and hear the words and I do not trust him.
He will take what is Earth’s treasure for himself like they’re golf balls….. I play golf, and those who recover those golf balls SELL them. Why should the beautiful creatures lose it all so he can sell and make money while killing a whole ecosystem?
Let him invest in urban planning to make cities walkable, with public mass transportation and green energy generation.
😂 Barron wants to use a blowtorch to roast a marshmallow. And make money.
I wonder if we tossed this idea to Biden he would probably sign it
Oil like stones were found? Sounds like that area needs some “American democracy”
*There are actually a lot of battery concepts around that aren't dependent on rare earth metalls. Still western batterys have a mainstreamed regulation and production, so it would be costly to replace it with something more … dunn, less suicidal.
If we could just have known. I mean the prooven concept have been there since before 1900, and in WW2 the german postal service went on making a fleet of rechargeable battery cars for lack of fuel and metall ressources. But this is … i mean, how we could have known? Soeone had to read a book or ask an old person!
And we all know this leads directly to communism, right?
Don't fuck around with ancient shit you don't know the details of. Have you not seen The Mummy??
Capitalism is just a speedrun of how fast we can kill our planet
Already played Subnautica. Skip.
Seems like all types of Musks tend to recycle horribly dumb and several times debunked ideas from history.
Maybe they could have done more harm to humanity if they had any imagination or the slightest idea of technology.
Fun to see the debate about 'future solutions – let's mine the ocean floor for little metall balls' made full circle from the 70's to present day.
I agree with what you said full-heartedly but, John, the points that you raised about why we shouldn't exploit the ocean are not quite enough. There are more reasons and there should be a LOT more research into this and there should be a full list of the exact ways in which this sort of deep-sea mining will affect the ecosystem and the ocean in general.
You tree huggers are out of control. Key word "surprising" amount of life. Meaning still a tiny amount of bio mass
