“ServeTheHome”

We test the 1U version of the fanless Everything homelab node to find a $300 8-core system with 4x 10G ports, 5x 2.5GbE ports, and SATA JBOD expansion. This makes a great pfSense, OPNsense, Proxmox VE, Debian, Linux, TrueNAS, Ubuntu, or other box. One can even customize it with ECC memory and…

  1. Ethernet ports have a problem of 225 and 226 with dhcp. In virtual machines, the DHCP package client does not work properly over the bridge for virtual machines, but the client does not physically connected. I have a problem on MS-01 to make it a firewall, etc.

  2. I have one of these, and…. the only display output is vga.
Know what I definitely don't have kicking around really anymore? VGA. So I tried putting an ssd with an opnsense install in it and…. didn't seem to work. So I'm guessing I need to mess with the bios, but…. QOTOM, can we please get displayport and/or a BMC/IPMI?

I tried getting hooked up with a serial console and I get… something resembling the BIOS, but nothing I could actually interact with.

  3. I've got this, mostly on the recommendation of this video, and I'm not trying to get on you back on this…. but I would please appreciate some advice and yes I've been all over your forums. It works great, but I can't get any of the 10G SFP+ ports to work with opensense, pfsense, proxmox whatever. I've tried two different types of SFP adaptors but all I get is a lot of rx errors. I really want this to be a good unit but it just doesn't work at 10g

  4. Can someone please advise me if I should get a box like this or an n100/i3-n305? What is the “max speed” achievable for router/firewall/vpn for this Atom cpu vs the Alder lakes? Would LOVE a comparison video!!!

  5. I’d be happy for a simple 1U rack that’s just full of everything, A’s, B’s, Micros, thunderbolts, camera shit, audio shit, plug straight into the wall with a normal, decent kettle chord, put two on there if you want, whatever, why doesn’t it exist. 😩

  6. I ordered mine barebones. And bought RAM and 2 NVME drives for it.

I turned it on, hooked up VGA. And nothing…

Does it take a while to train the memory before it boots?

Or did the RAM I buy not compatible?

  7. Q always makes the K sound. ALWAYS. The fact that in US English is most often has a u following it is where the "w" sound comes from. In reality, it's a proper u sound. K-oo-ih-k for quick. Meanwhile, you don't say Kwatahr when you say Qatar. You say Kah-TAR.

So it's not "Quote'em" it's Koh-tom. Even if the manufacturer says "Quote'em" they are wrong too.

  8. Hey Patrick long time watcher, I have been struggling with pfSense hardware and went through two fanless units over the last couple year, a protectli and a topton. Both had hardware problems and overheating and needed to be rebooted or have HDD replaced. I bought this from aloexpress immediately after your video, it shipped from the US same day and I had it in hand the day after. I set it up with proxmox and hardware pass through of several nics including the SPF+ which goes to my switch and wifi access points. It's working great my speeds are wonderful it's quiet, cool, and stable. I did have to spend a couple hours putting together a Google doc that documented the hardware addresses and a map of the ports…😅. Thank you!

  9. Maybe someone can help me with this. I got the rack mounted Qotom Q20331G9 , installed OpnSense, connected both wan and lan with 10Gbps SFP+ modules and connected to a symmetrical 10Gbps internet connection. I get 1.2Gbps in download and 65Mbps in upload with the box in pass all mode (just a bridge) and 4gbps down and 6.5gbps up without the box. Of course Speedtest isn't the most consistent thing but 60Mbps to 6Gbps…I'm sure something is wrong (most likely, I did something wrong myself). Any suggestions?

  10. Oh man I kinda want one of these to replace my Edgerouter 4 box. It's been on my list to find a solid (while energy and cost) efficient platform to replace it with to get into Opnsense but haven't found anything yet. This may be the box I pickup to replace my aging hardware.

  11. They have a bug in the hw-design on the motherboard for the sim-card slot. According to the spec a pin is supposed to be pulled to ground when no sim is present and left unconnected when sim is present. It does it the other way around. I had to remove a surface mounted component to get the 4g-modem to understand that there actually were a sim-card installed.

  12. I love how much I/O this thing has. It's approaching my ideal for a "perfect homelab Proxmox/Ceph cluster box" — enough cores and RAM to support OSDs, boot from SATA and have two NVMes for OSDs, plenty of at least 10G networking for Ceph inter-host and client traffic. Not taking advantage of the AST2400 as a BMC sucks, though, as does PCI Gen 3 x2 for the NVMes. For $100 more the Minisforum MS-01 still holds the crown for this I think.

  13. I have one of the passive versions on my desk right now burning in before turning it into a new Proxmox host that will run OPNsense for my WAN edge, along with a couple utility VMs (e.g. PiHole, Unifi controller, etc).

I would suggest AVOIDING "Nemix RAM" from Newegg. I bought 2x 32GB ECC sticks in a kit from them; both of them are throwing ECC errors in Passmark Memtest. The sticks appear to have Micron chips on them, but something isn't right… I have a pair of actual Crucial/Micron sticks coming direct from them soon and plan on returning the Nemix stuff for a refund.
