When debates arise on what the worlds strongest militaries are, attention tends to focus on the United States, PRC, and the Russian Federation. Less often mentioned is India…and I think that’s a massive oversight.

No video I've ever done has taken as long to put together as this one – so there's probably no better choice for a near end of year release.

This video was a hard one to produce – firstly because of the scale of the subject (ideally I'd actually be able to do 3 videos on India – this one, one on modernisation and the future (because Indian industry and the armed forces are likely to look a lot different in 15 years than they are now) and something like a procurement best of/deep dive into the best and worst programs and systems to come out of India).

It was also hard because simple messages are easy, and India isn't simple. What I have tried to do is capture the scale and strength of the Indian military, the potential of its industry and economy and its increasing ambition – as well as some of the factors that have held it back, particularly when it comes to what I know best, which is budgeting and procurement.

Given time limits – some topics have been simplified or omitted (including some of India's border disputes) but please don't take those omissions as a statement that those factors are irrelevant.

Not all sources fit in the source list so I'll put together a document holding additional resources and add that as a link in the next 24 hours or so (please keep an eye out and read the description section).

I hope you all enjoy, and I'll see you again next week.

  2. If I was the Indian state in Victoria 2, I'd heavily promote pro-Pakistan sentiment in the country to open up a chance to normalize relations… But I guess the current government depends on the anti-Pakistan vote.

  3. As an Indian I'll say Arjun is a very bad tank.
Instead of asking for technological transfers, India should try to reverse engineer the technology and copy them like China does.

  4. India is Predominantly Socialist Country and all Defence Manufacturing is in the Hands of Few and that's why there is very Low scope for Innovation and Cost effective Cutting Edge Manufacturing Facilities.
    Skilled Manpower.
Unless Government Privatize these Sectors there is Very less Hope for Improvement.

P.S. my work is Related to This Industry.

  5. India’s relationships with the West and Russia reminds me of how Turkey (Türkiye) balances its relationships. How both are not on anyone’s side but their own

  6. Why will he not talk about Australia in any form. Its common knowledge is that it's part of the quad. Are the security forces that scary. He did mention them before, but I thought it was a bit tongue and cheek.

  7. Thanks for the video, I look forward every week to sit down and watch PowerPoint slides. I know it's crazy but I do enjoy them. Keep up the good work @Perun and Happy New Year down under from the UK.

  8. " India's military evolution and strategy are likely to become ever more significant regional and global factors in the coming years." ONE WEEK LATER . . . . Iran !

  9. Thank You, Perun, for this briefing on India/Bahrat. I've been looking forward to it. So proud when they landed on the moon. (High Fives all around!)
Merry Christmas to you and your family and may the New Year bring victory for Ukraine. 🇺🇦♥️

  10. reminds me a lot of indian customers during my freelancer career in IT. they tended to want a lot for unreasonably cheap, whilst the indian freelancers worked for dirt cheap, promised the moon and delivered a barely working product. I had several companies that tried indian freelancers several times and then decided to instead spend more money on a european freelancer, so they would actually get a product they can launch.

  11. You're telling me that the convoluted, extremely short term driven german procurement budgets that get overturned because of frantic lawsuits causing stays of executing said budget is made to look like a high efficiency, low drag operation???? Dear lord, no wonder the CCP is so damn cheeky with these guys. Even though the demographics should be blaring "DO NOT ATTEMPT" at decibel level where your bones could interpret it for the politicians that have deliberately made themselves deaf and ignorant to anything that isn't published on from a "trusted" news source.
