“60 Minutes”

Wyoming is the nation’s top coal mining state, but Republican Gov. Mark Gordon is a leading voice on climate-friendly energy projects. Amid pushback, Gordon has set a net-negative emissions goal.

“60 Minutes” is the most successful television broadcast in history. Offering hard-hitting…

  1. CARBON SEQUESTRATION PRODUCES METHANE

There are various artificial and natural forms of 'carbon sequestration', including in particular injecting CO2 into exhausted salt dome oil fields. This was done in one formation in Louisiana starting in the 1980's. In the early 2020's the gas was analyzed – 20% of it had turned to methane.

Natural sequestration occurs in 'limnic lakes', such as Lake Kivu in Africa. CO2 seeps into the water through volcanic rifts. This accumulates at the bottom of the lake, along with heat, organic matter, and microbes. Again, about 20% of the gas dissolved in this water is methane.

In any situation where CO2 is injected into the ground, the potential for methane formation is driven by various mixtures of heat, water, 'ultramafic' rocks, microbial life, organic matter, and certain minerals. A combination of heat, microbes, 'kerogen', and water is a formula for significant methane production, and vast areas of Wyoming are part of the Green River Formation. Kerogen by itself is difficult to convert into lighter hydrocarbons. However, the addition of other inputs can change that equation.

Carbon-Hydrogen bonds are measured at 413Kilojoule per gram molar. Since methane consists of four of these bonds, the total bond energy is 1652Kj per mole. CO2 consists of 2 carbon-oxygen double bonds, which are 799Kj/M each, or 1598Kh/M total. This suggests that any process that temporarily breaks up CO2 and/or water into ions, regardless of how transitory, will favor the formation of methane and O2 in comparison to CO2/H2O. Among the minerals that can catalyze hydrocarbon reactions are iron, nickel, and copper.

This suggests that 'methane will always be with us', and that sequestered CO2 and the associated evolved methane will have to be managed. This suggests that the sequestered gas will have to be extracted from time to time, and the accumulated methane burned to generate power.

  2. When you have the tendency for high sustained winds, it is only common sense to take advantage of it.
Especially in light of the "loyalty" to oil exclusivity mindset is falling to it's knees.

  3. Sometimes, it’s really silly to hear that republicans and democrats agree on something or support each other on something. We’ve gotten so politically polarized that cooperation is reportable news. Just silly. Finally, government is collaborating for the sake of constituents and the physical environment. It’s monumental, but it really should be the expected daily occurrence.

  4. Interview was a sham. Was pitched slow, soft-ball questions. Nothing was asked about the terrible environmental costs of of coal mining and the poisonous chemicals it's burning releases into the air.

  5. Money and greed is the only thing they're worried about, nothing else, they'll be long gone and environment will be worse just like every other money hungry a hole

  6. Carbon Capture is almost a waste of time. Billions in CO2 go out, and barely Millions (if that much) are recaptured by carbon capture. It's an excuse to keep making billions of CO2. The only real way is to stop producing it to start with. If a plan isn't in progress to end it, it won't matter.

  7. It should worry Republicans greatly that the biggest news value here is in finding a smart, honest, actually business friendly, and scientifically literate red top politician. Not fighting pointless culture wars, but making his home state attractive to future proof businesses is actually just doing his job. It's an example to follow.

  8. Coal fired power plants are being phased out and shut down because coal is no longer an economic fuel source. Wind turbines and solar panels generate energy at less cost and that doesn't even take into account the CO2 damage to the environment and the adverse health effects of mercury and soot emissions caused by coal.

  9. "Promoting climate-friendly plans.." is a typical nonsense-statement from climate alarmists! No human plans will have any meaningful influence on the climate! It is controlled by the Sun and the oceans and the orbit around the Sun.
