“Mudprints”

Having seen most of the DonPachi series on Bullet Heaven, DoDonPachi DaiOuJou was the clear missing missing link… but no more. The Java Port wasn’t enough; now with the release of DoDonPachi DaiOuJou Re: Incarnation on Switch and PS4, we’re looking at ALL of DaiOuJou, on this super special…

  1. Small correction: "Daijoubu" on its own is a statement of reassurrance and actually means, "It's alright," or, "Everything's fine". "Are you okay?" would be "Daijoubu desuka?" It's still pretty funny!

  2. Although I understand the appeal of DOJ, it never clicked with me. Same goes with Ketsui. It's not necessarily the machanics but the overall "cold" feel/setting to them. Futari(BL) would the complete opposite of that, it's totally "Yeah!!"

  3. I really enjoyed this overview of Dai-Ou-Jou. Have to sink more time in DOJ and DFK to find a personal answer to which game I prefer. Loved that you took the time to highlight all the different modes and versions of DOJ. Will definitely check out the mobile version for some shorter pick up and play sessions.

  4. Fantastic video as always, and I'd love to see more like this! I'm with you on White Label, it's just too brutal to be enjoyable, but in a lot of ways it felt like Cave was still figuring things out and it was vital to that whole process.

  5. I never managed to get that one achievement on the 360 version where you have to shoot an obscene number of ships. I hope that isn’t a trophy on the ps4 version!

  6. The wider look at multiple ports felt at home next to Bullet Heaven's always thorough coverage. Good times all around. I'm also a sucker for home ports. Bonus points if they're weird, ambitious, or unnecessary.

  7. This is excellent. The amount of information, the editing, the format, the gameplay (you are pretty good actually!)… you are a terrific content creator, I mean it. As hard as it is to get big when you are specialised in such a niche genre, this channel deserves to be huge. In any case, as can be seen in the comments, you have many passionate followers. Thank you, and keep them coming 😀

As for the game, it's a masterpiece. But yeah, not for everybody. I see your points. Besides the hardcore gameplay, which is indeed frustrating, there is something very interesting in this game that I don't think you mentioned: its sad, post-apocalyptic atmosphere. I truly love it.

And btw Kenichiro Fukui is amazing. Einhänders music is forever ingrained in my mind. What a game that is… I dream of a remaster.

  8. Big up from London for this! It’s good to hear a human take on the fact that the base game is just hard, and not in a good way.

For the future, I really think the world would be a better place for having even 1 video of this detail about how to approach and beat Shmups. In a parallel universe there is probably one about how the Japanese did it with zero practice tools, but I doubt we will ever get to see it!

  9. Finally it's here! Really enjoyed this episode.
This was my first foray into DOJ and had such a blast with it, even if it kicked my arse. Luna Tour especially was a great way to experience harder difficulty in smaller chunks at a time.
Now to praying we get Futari or SDOJ from M2 in the future.

Excited to see the next episodes. Short or long vids, both are very enjoyable to watch!

  10. I do love that M2 caters to a variety of skillsets in their Cave releases. I'm happiest somewhere in between novice and arcade mode, so I often find an arrange mode that is just right.

  11. Great review. The comparison with the previous versions is not only interesting from a technical perspective but also from a historical one. Unfortunately, it also shows that some of ports are upgrades in one area and downgrades in another – I guess the switch version can't be played via touch screen like ios? Also, too bad that it's not available on western psn or steam…

  12. You can tell that a Herculean amount of effort and detail went into this. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for this. I hope to see future shmup releases that will deserve this type of deep dive.

  13. Really enjoyed hearing your take on DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou, haven't taken the plunge into BL arcade yet but I had fun with the M2 port arrange modes (I felt a bit sorry for the nerfed hibachi in them though!).
I think your commitment to creating such an informative and entertaining video despite not being 100% sold on the material is commendable too, especially in this long form format (which I think is ace and would love to see more of!).
Guess the game was pretty Daijoubu for you, I'm hoping to find more from it if I go on to try the BL 1-ALL but we'll see!

  14. I really appreciate the honesty of your take on (the many forms of) DOJ. It's often hailed as the jewel in Cave's crown, but few people are able to explain what it is exactly that makes it stand out in such a positive way in what is already an oeuvre of genre masterclasses, and it can come across as fans just aping certain authorative opinions.
