The PAC-3 Patriot uses a kinetic kill warhead, meaning that the warhead physically strikes the incoming TBM, these weapons are closing on each other at a combined speed of ~Mach 10. So there should me more deformation than a little hole.

The common arguments about the effectiveness of the Patriot are twofold.

The first is that the Patriot performed poorly during Operation Desert Storm. There is some truth to this, but it has more to do with the nature of first-generation Patriot missiles having proximity warheads than the effectiveness of the system. The Patriots were hitting, but they just weren't killing because at Mach 10, even explosions take time to form, and the incoming SCUD missile often passed the code of Patriot shrapnel by the time it fully expanded.

The second argument is that Patriots can't shoot down Hypersonic Missiles – but the problem with that line of thinking is that TMBs (Theater Ballistic Missiles) are already hypersonic – meaning that they travel over Mach 5. So killing Hypersonic Cruise missiles may not be that difficult for the Patriot, although it is made harder if the cruise missile his hypersonic and maneuvering.

  2. Yes, older ballistic missiles traveled faster than Mach 5, but the newer versions of hypersonic ballistic missiles increasingly have the capability to follow unpredictable non-parabolic flight during the glide phase. The Patriot is an excellent system, but our near peers have predictably been developing countermeasures.

  3. Raytheon failed the last hypersonic missle test done 3 days ago, and the DoD postponed the program until further notice. Let the Ukrainians attend the next test, maybe the US will finally have its first hypersonic missile. Keep Ratheon testing in the tunnel, or offer a Russian fighter 2M USD for a MiG with a Russian dagger, as they already did. Wake up from the Western movie you are still living in. C ya

  4. The spokesperson from the Ukrainian Air Force have confirmed that they are incapable of shooting down kinzhal missiles ergo the previous claims of shooting them down have been false.

  5. I would also point out that the Russian hypersonic missile is not a hypersonic cruise vehicle. It has no glider and no scram jet engine. It's a regular missile with a hypersonic booster. It's not much different from a tactical missile…. The very thing the Patriots were designed to shoot down.

  6. И The Chinese envoy asked to see a piece of the downed Kinzhal during his visit to Kiev, but they didn't show him anything! Nice prices to sell another Patriot and the story about the downing of Kinžal disappeared quickly!

  7. from saudi to ukraine patriot missiles have been exposed for being an utter disaster. if this were russian equipment we'd never hear the end of how bad it is.

  8. Fun fact: Another defect of the first patriot missile system is that its software sufferred from a rounding error. It was a case study in my university Numerical Methods course.

Specifically, the software was designed with decimal (base-10) numbers in mind, the ordinarybnumbers we all use in everyday life; however, computers and software are designed to work with binary (base-2) numbers. Therefore, something as simple as the decimal number 0.1 cannot be exactly represented in binary format; it has to be rounded to the nearest binary value.

Normally, such a small rounding error can be ignored; however, this rounding error occured within an recursive algorithm used to track the SCUD missile in flight. The calculated number would then be put through the same algorithm over and over again, causing the rounding error to snowball to the point that the tracking system was off by significant distances. This caused the missiles to miss their targets completely.

A temporary solution was that the system had to be rebooted every couple hours to reset the error caused by the rounding.

The lesson was the importance of knowing the limitations of your hardware. You might give it the correct, perfect mathematical formula, but something as simple as repeatedly multiplying by 0.1 can cause significantly-incorrect results.

  9. Wasn't the problem with the Patriot Missile in the Gulf War due to some programming issue where numbers were rounded that ended up causing it to become less and less accurate over time?

  10. This misinformation maggot really grindz my gears. Do you really think russia has only ONE kind of hypersonic missile? Do you really think the creators of the S-300 wouldn't understand how to improve their missile systems to combat the patriot missile system? Face it, you gave the Russians a chance to adapt to your weapons systems before you even fought them.

  11. The Kinzhal has a length of 8 m, a body diameter of 1 m, and a launch weight of approximately 4,300 kg and what they show in the video is not even 2 meters tall and 40cm diameter, now I know you are a Ukrainian propaganda channel too, go ahead and remove my comment and block me becauae the trurh is not welcome on your platform 🤣

  12. It doesn't matter if a Patriot can or can not shoot down a hypersonic missile; what matters is that five systems were sent to Kiev and all five have been destroyed by the Russians. They did it by faking a missile attack to expose the Patriot radar and then dropped a hypersonic missile on the radar signature. Patriot systems are more marketing hype than a useful weapon in a real war against a modern military — like Russia.

  13. Wasnt the only issue with the Patriot system pretty much a coding error that allowed for a cumulative clock drift that interfered with correct target tracking? No problem detected in US run systems ( we reboot regularly, resetting clock error each time ) but the systems given to Isreal (never reboots system, clock error gets worse and worse) had a hard time with SCUDs?

  14. its true, nailed 6 so far. the crap hypersonic missle , slows down to retarget at closer range once it slows down patriot nails it. russian lied about the hyper sonic missle being fast.

  15. I'm trying to learn about hypersonics because much of the information makes no sense. At some point the missle will have to slow down to be able to navigate. So isn't that the time for Patriots to do their work?
