  1. Hi Juliet
Just found your channel & am enjoying it, glad to hear your knees aren't as bad as 1st feared. I'm 'only' 54 & waiting to have both my arthritic knees replaced. Yrs of sports have taken their toll. I currently can't even manage a revolution on the pedals!! Once sorted I aim to get back out on the gravel bike, put my hiking boots back on & get exploring my home county of Devon again.
Got to make the most of it, we should never take our health & fitness for granted 👍

  2. I was all things bicycling for years…5 bikes in the garage. Then I got involved with horses..my life changed forever. No bike can ever compare to riding horseback. Leaving cycling behind is like quitting smoking and I've never looked back.

  3. Funny I used to be a Pro Snowboarder back in the 90s, not jumping more downhill Euro racing and definitely have a larger right calf and stronger right leg, do you have a link for Lucy, she really knows her stuff, I have a dodgy left knee too😂?

  4. In reference to your wondering if your right leg being more muscular than the left because of being the rear leg whilst snow boarding , yes absolutely from years of martial arts training right foot back stance the muscular definition in my right leg is noticeably larger and my left knee has tibial shift , i dont notice it cycling but i tend to wear the leading side of the chainrings more to the right leg down stroke no matter how hard i try to circular spin both legs also i track stand right foot forward 🙂🙂🙂

  5. I haven't been able to ride for 10 years due to a damaged hip flexor but your videos have always calmed me down when I've generally been stressed in life. I have had grinding knees in the past and jus stopping eating gluten fixed them (I was undiagnosed celiac). I think I heard you mention you get raynaud's syndrome? so you might want to thing about that and take vitamin D

  6. bad knee? well….time to get a right proper eBike :+D i've been riding one since i lost my knees fighting in a war for petroleum and there is no shame, anyone who thinks they are better than me can piss off 😉

  7. Next chapter in cycling career. You'll organize " England countryside bike gravel tours" camps for riders of all ages & abilities. For success you need local road knowledge and a great friendly outgoing personality. check-check.

  8. What cycling career?
Many ailments start by what you put in your body. Poison the body, the body breaks down.
Carbs = sugar = inflammation which breaks down the body.
Too much fruit? Too many vegetables?
Wheat, alcohol, processed foods, pastries, they are all poison.
The so called 'standard diet' is a myth and why so many unhealthy people with heart disease and joint problems.
Inflamation is the enemy. Bad cycling biomechanics, high repetition degrades knees, hips and ankles and even feet.
Mid cleats, proper Q-factor, proper foot varus, proper knee tracking, lack of asymmetry aka any adjustment for length length difference, even saddle height is big and turning a proper gear.
People don't know what to put in their body and don't know how to ride a bicycle properly.
An ebike for many with lower watt expenditure is the ticket. Ride in zone 2 of HR for great fitness.

  9. I've been having knee tracking problems for a while. The exercises my phsyio gave me to do are definitely helping although its slow progress. I have the added woe of having Rheumatoid Arthritis which can confuse things at times. I'm still riding and racing xc mtb usually finishing mid pack. Do your exercises and you should see results 😊

  10. I was born with spina bifida my left leg is tons more stinger than my right , smashed in shins ,separated shoulder, cracked ribs at 59 I've just slowed down a bit & wear a helmet ,If my back falls off I might stop for a week or 2.

  11. My right side is stronger than the left. I wonder if it’s something to do with the drive side being on the right. If you think you are creaky at your age wait until you are in your sixties, like me.

  12. Your biking career is DEFINITELY not over, however, it may be time to start paying closer attention to your body and some of the excellent "bike knowledge" that is out there. I rode my first century in 1968 and have had a merry old time simply riding for the next few decades. In my 50 and 60's I certainly noticed that I could no longer simply ride my bike. Resistance training, diet management, rest days, etc…………all became part of my continuing love affair with my bike. So, get into the gym a tiny bit more, eliminate your strength imbalance, eat more protein and don't miss rest days. You'll ride forever. Good luck………

  13. Hi Juliet , I had similar problems with left & right strength disparity, switched to single leg exercises and 3 months later I'm almost 50/50, your dominant side will always be slightly stronger so its never going to be perfect. good luck.

  14. As a former pro whitewater kayaker, there always comes a time in life when the injuries start to change what you can do. The more violent the sports, the faster that time comes. Making the transition from competitive to casual can be hard, for me it was a big help remembering how much fun exploring is and learning to tap into flow state in other sports I do.

  15. I had arthroscopic surgery on Mar 3rd for patella realignment. The MRI showed some wear from my kneecap not being aligned but when they were in there the groove looked a lot better and the underside of the kneecap wasn't as bad as thought. I am in PT now 3 times per week and riding a recumbent bike. It takes a while to get flexibility back but each week gets better. I hope everything gets better for you.

  16. At 74 and still cycling (coming up on 10 years (7 with a coach) my ankles and knees are being adversely affected by gout attacks that come and go. I'm going all in on he medical stuff (but never could tolerate any of the drugs long term which is a challenge) and now including weightlifting with a coach. Please more Lucy and updates on how you're doing. Somedays I need all the inspiration I can get 🙂

  17. Surely, the Dynamometer reading would be far more accurate if it was fixed to a solid mount? There is a variation introduced to the reading by the varying resistance provided by the clinician. This could be quite significant possibly making the reading very inaccurate.

  18. It’s just a case of managing one ailment after another as you age, I was great upto 48 then had a few medical issues, pneumonia was the worst so that stopped my winter riding and it took 8 months to recover!!!! I’m 54 now and it’s a constant battle to maintain strength and speed on the bike, I’m doing squats and I’ve ditched the granny gears and gone old school, steel road bike with 23/53/39 gearing and it’s working!!!!😀 to all you oldies out there, stop looking for ever easier gearing and go old school, you gotta build strenfffff 😃

  19. Very informative! would love to see suggested exercises to address knee stability!
After my 65th birthday I add one tooth to the large cassette ring every year 🙂

  20. I’m 60 and still mountain biking, I’ve got two total knee replacements, that doesn’t stop me doing what I want to. Look after your knees as Baz Lurhmann said. Nice to see Bovey again, spent many lovely year down that way when I was in the forces.

  21. I rode snowboard recreational for 10 years and my riding front leg knee became really sore after every season and now dislocates when I sit indian style although I seem to have no problems with weights, riding mountain bike or walking. I use the sitting lower leg lift machine to strengthen my quad and it seems to keep the dislocating knee down to a minimum.
