  1. After spending lots of money and hours upon hours of testing, I've found that every single jerkbait is different. Even if it's the exact same brand and size. Some Megabass Vision 110's suspend perfectly, some slow sink and some slow rise. Some leak and get water in them lol
Also, the water temp changes everything. Cold water is thicker than warm water. You may have your bait perfectly suspending in summertime, but then you'll have to adjust it again when it gets cold.
There is no one size fits all answer for all of them.

  2. Very cool, never heard of a Styrofoam modification before. I've performed probably hundreds of buoyancy tests with jerkbaits on various brands and sizes. I can attest, those 4 size hooks would make the Megabass Jr +1s sink fairly fast; too fast for a natural presentation. I'm also looking for close to neutral bouyancy in 50-51 degree water, so I go with 6's on them and swap out the last hook to various sizes, to get it to suspend (without using Styrofoam). I also rotate out the front split ring sizes to increase/decrease weight. Not a fan of suspend strips, b/c they fall off and the only way to permanently put them on is super glue and I try to avoid permanent modifications when possible. A feather on the last hook is great. I know the X-raps come with it standard, but I like the feather on the end for a different look. You can also get a little crazy with jerkbaits if they sink just a touch and you don't like the paint job. I've scraped off some paint on the bottom and or sides to make the bait more transparent or to get rid of the paint. The reduction in some paint can make a slowly sinking bait suspend. The Yo-Zuri sp deeps are examples of paint jobs on the bottom that I disliked and scraped the paint off. Some people also swear by a red front hook and some also color the baits with permanent marker to put chartreuse or other colors on certain parts of the bait. I wonder if jerkbait manufacturers will design jerkbaits with the ability to change the weight and ability of the bait to suspend. Maybe that's the future. Also, the KVD Mustad triple grips 2xstrong 1xshort are awesome hooks and I doubt a 4 pounder could bend them out. Rod flex also plays a part; you're more apt to bend out hooks with stiffer rods, so it depends on what you like to throw and how you fight the fish. Good stuff.
