Not to micro-manage you, but it would probably be easier to keep 1 garbage can in your inventory instead of your backpack with the important stuff so its both faster access and so you always have the room you need to put all the other stuff back from your backpack, the 300ish you need, tho it might make picking certain stuff up difficult if you dont have the option to drop it anywhere.

And my guess for the purple pink crystal is you have to back away fast enough after hitting it to not get hit, as the explosion seemed slightly delayed?

I'm pretty sure you went through enough pain, to prove you gave fall damage an honest effort. Also until you actually need to incept garbage cans you could fit up to 3 or 4 cans in one can which would make unpacking them slightly less painful. It almost seems like you have a split second to get away before the purple crystal catches you on fire. (I could be wrong) but worth a try.
