  1. I grew up in Bay City and there were coal mines all over the county with tunnels or fingers, that would run out under the Saginaw Bay. I even remember a spoil pile out near Unionville in the thumb. Another item that was mined heavily was salt. The old pictural maps of Bay City show numerous salt mines all along the Saginaw River.
