Off-Grid Bitcoin Mining with excess power from your solar and battery. Worth or Waste?

#OffGrid #Bitcoin #Mining #excess #power

“Off-Grid Garage”

Is using excess power from your solar system for mining #Bitcoins worth it? When you are grid connected, you usually get paid when you feed power back to the grid. Not much, but you get some money for it.
However, what do you do when you are #offgrid , like I am? Excess energy is plentiful in…

  1. Good job Andy, really interesting stuff, Ive been wondering if/when you would touch on this subject.
I was considering doing something similar with 2.5kw of pv on a remote bus setup I have & dont use much, but you have confirmed what I suspected with bitcoin mining, & then there are so many other unmentioned variables that I didn’t consider it would be worth the time, noise, heat & upgrades necessary to do it.
So many comments on turning ur excess power into heat storage, I would imagine the best way to accomplish that would be with heat pump tech, but what about selling it back into the grid at peak times & use ur excess battery storage to dump & store power, imagine this would be much simpler than bitcoin mining & maintenance, without all the heat and racket & make more use of ur batteries, it may not be a very efficient way of dumping ur excess power for money return, but simple & quiet. Cheers

  2. How about this: there are water cooled versions available. If you run ir through a heat exchanger, you could heat up water for domestic use, or even dump the heat into the pool 😅

  3. Hi Andy, I'm doing the same with an antminer S9 17TH, and a RIG with four graphic cards. The alternative option is producing Hydrogen from water. Peppe from Napoli.

  4. Andy, I would just like to remind you it's only 35 days until the Solstice, (mercifully) then your system will be shutting down for winter. You need to factor this into your annual earnings and ROI😂😂😂
    Love fae a dreich & dark 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    Am nae jealous…. Honest lol

  5. Hi Andy, great episode. I have a similar setup here in Germany. I set up 6 S9 Miners (4.8kW total :-)) but they ran only in case if I overcome my feedin-limit. My setup is controlled by Raspberry pi since two years now. By statistics, I see that I reach 30% runtime per year. As you said the noise is the biggest issue, therefore I decided to use AC in order to controll room temperature, consequently the fans getting slower.
Would I do it again? Maybe not, even if it is ok now. 🙂

  7. I'm offgrid and in summer 90% of available solar energy remains unused. It is cheaper not to use excess energy than to use it in most cases.
You need to also consider the cost of the extra battery degradation if it is involved and also the wear on the inverter and some other equipment involved.

  8. Hi Andy, This video is very surprising!!

but it's certain many of us, with an Off grid system

When the weather is very sunny, we have excess production that we do not use. and it’s true, it’s a shame!

But then this Mining option is pure bullshit for me? but hey, why not. but personally I wouldn't do it.

But once again thank you for raising this subject, of not being able to properly use excess solar production.

  9. holy cow. if you got complains (and that in australia haha) from neighbours, when the airport was build here haha….i dont know what to say haha

But your calculation is wrong. 250 bucks for the machine, but didnt you pay 90 to ship the boards to china to "repair"? (I suggest they even sell it like this haha)

  10. Hi Andy, what if you put peltier modules for the fans to suck cold air into the mining rig to help cool the mining boards, will it create moisture buildup inside the mining rig that could damage the mining boards?i know peltier modules are inefficient but just a thought…great video by the way and thanks!

  11. Andy, maybe you can try some energy arbitrage. Would love to see you explore the world of buying and selling energy on the grid. Looks like Amber offers something interesting. I’m sure there are others too. Anyway could be some great content!

  12. With grid tied batteries in Australia you can be on a wholesale pass through plan like with Amber Electric and export to the grid in the evening and be paid a lot more for that excess energy. Some distribution zones (e.g. Ausgrid) also have favourable tariff structure for just this purpose. It's far more environmentally preferable. Problem is the costs for grid-tied batteries is very high compared with off-grid set ups.

I have a regular retail plan and our export tariff is 12c/kWh.

  13. You can get more efficient miners. The old ones are cheap because they are not profitable most places. Bitcoin also changes its value and as you saw it recently bumped in price and gave you more $/day. Best strategy is to hold Bitcoin you mine until price hits a new high.

  14. I believe that DC to DC charging at high voltage, way above 300V is actually the fastest to charge those EV. I think it would be pretty much like the CC-CV charging you perform on your cell using the ZKETECH tester? But I don't know enough to advise you.

  15. Andy, I'm totally off grid too and do not own any EV as of yet. BUT… if I had such surplus extra energy like what you have, I would sell my energy to my neighbors. I assume you have a Level 2 charging station, but maybe some of your neighbors who are not so fortunate could tap into that resource of yours. Here in California I would use the Craigslist to advertise my "Peer2Peer" station. Perhaps you already have a community near you promoting this peer to peer energy idea with more technical expertise to create electronic wallets, credit card checking. If not just charge a modest amount that appeals to your neighbors. I'm sure it will get them hooked more seriously once they realize how convenient it is to be able to charge nearby at a place you trust, without breaking your wallet. I'm sure you can make a lot more money than that. That's an idea I've had for a while already, but I know I'm not the only one out there thinking of it that way. It's an evolutionary commodity brought about having smartphones and embracing the greener future.
