Why The U.S. Is Running Out Of Mining Workers

The U.S. is running out of miners. More than half of the nation’s mining workforce, about 220,000 workers, are expected to retire by 2029 and the number of candidates willing to fill those slots is shrinking. At the same time, demand for minerals like lithium, cobalt and copper, critical…

Nobody wants to work anymore
I'm halfway through the video and all I can think about it is…I just really hope we can invent a machine or robot that can master the craft of mining elements. It is so dangerous to humans yet so vital for our evolution. We already got to the point where heavy machinery made it so efficient already but we need a single human being to operate simple tasks throughout the whole process for each piece of equipment. I think any kid who spends more than 5 hours a day playing video games can easily be an operator to these machines. We don't sell it as that… we sell it as a hardcore crazy job to a young sheltered kid that doesn't know they have that ability cuz they been hooked on games all their life… That is probably why there aren't young people in this trade.. Once it becomes autonomous the company will have to decide if it's economically useful to hire a human or an A.I for the operators of the equipment. Right now operators medium salary is around 57000 dollars. How expensive is it to keep a robot powered in a year…. especially when energy is produced with little cost and no "pollution" also I think the lack of minors now is just the overall awareness that mining and pollution is bad for the world and they will not morally contribute to that.
People prefer to get a degree to sit behind a desk instead of doing real work with there hands
Women want men that are doctors not miners.
Everyone here has it completely wrong. This is not about the pay. I am about to graduate with my bachelors degree in geological engineering with an emphasis in mining. I have had 3 internships in mines from Montana, Colorado, and Vermont. All of this is because everyone wants to sit behind a computer all day and not get their hands dirty… Haul truck drivers are the exact same as semi drivers. They get paid $57,000 a year because they drive in circles all day in an air-conditioned cab.
EV cars are dumb.
If that is how Rio Tintos mines are it looks line im shorting them tomorrow. How are they not using conveyors to go up the slopes?
were can i go for school or get involved for free i just got laid off id love an opertunity to be a minor some body point me in the right direction please
It’s a shortage of real men
I’ll will do it for 300k a year
58k a year is not enough, this a billion dollar industry, I think pay should be 250k a year
Any article that uses therm "war for talent" is spinning a false narrative. Most of those job "vacancies" are for positions that companies never intend to fill.
Because there is no mining left to be worked at, duh
Sounds like u shoulda been training people instead of resting on your laurels the past 30 years
Let me guess, is this the next blue collar job that will pay 350k a year?
Because the wages aren’t high enough to attract new people. Same for oil and gas, we are getting hammered with high housing costs, high food costs, high everything costs.
a lot of these mofo's are very tribal and don't wanna teach the new generation it give you hard time as a new guy 😣
We need to mine asteroids/moon and pay workers 500,000 to one million dollars per year in wages. Problem solved… your welcome
Probably because you told them all to go learn to code.
Maybe some realize having black lungs ain’t worth the money. It’s a dirty job located in remote areas. Try convincing this generation to put in their applications.
Dont worry, the industry Is moving from mining workers to minor workers
$57K to work as a machinery operator? HECK NO! WTF are you on? I wouldn’t do it for $150K
Ah yes! Yet another worker shortage to add to the list of staffing shortages. First it was trucker shortage, then medical staff, then restaurant worker shortage, then hotel worker, construction, etc. these shortages will continue until ceo's take a paycut and raise worker base pay.
U idiots so many more industries are gonna end up like this when anyone can be a real estate agent and get paid more money then they should ever see blue collar keep the world going around. Treat us that way.
The coal mines in South Eastern Utah are really competitive. They are paying quite a bit. It’s not hard to make over $80K for being on the lower end of the totem pole.
How have the US fixed this in the meat, car and other industries? Imported child labour from South America. Problem solved for mining as well
Just pay people more. We acknowledge it's a competitive for companies to get labor, but then flash a whopping $57k across the screen for an industry that comes with a lot of risk.
The math isn't hard. CEOs continue to pull the wool over everyone's eyes and pretend that there are some complex issues as to why people aren't flooding into their workforces. No one aspires to mine; pay people more so they do.
“Free market economy” as lots parasitic capitalist like to throw in your face. SO, IT IS OBVIOUS THAT MINING COMPANIES ARE NOT PAYING ENOUGH OF A WAGE… PAY UP!!!!!! FREE MARKET ECONOMY, baby!
$57,000/ year? There’s your problem. I suppose if it comes with 4 weeks of vacation, comprehensive health care, pension (and 401k for when the execs raid the pension) paternal leave, disability etc maybe ok. The US mining companies are headed for a lot of growth. If they want to keep unions at bay, they need to start paying now or suffer strikes and much greater wage expectations if they lose control of employee compensation.
lithium, cobalt and copper are not rare earth minerals.
I can dig it!
give me 400 a hr ill work 12 hr shifts 4days a week hell 5 dsys
Double their pay and see if the labour shortage remains.
"25 years ago we have 50 robust programs in mining, mineral engineering…" . And 25 years ago, education was cheap compared to today.
I know it seems a ludicrous idea, but have they tried giving prospective miners a decent wage?
Before watching this video, I thought, "Simply, pay the workers more." The video confirmed it. Offer the retiring workers a 2 to 4-year contract to train their replacements in recruitment schools with guaranteed jobs after they finish school. The main problem is the industry does not want to bear the cost.
Why is US running out of mining workers? …. because, just like in Trudeau's Canada, the government has declared war on mining in the vain effort to appease zealot climate and environment activists. Who would risk investing and working in those conditions?
The biggest problem facing the mining labor shortage is mandatory drug testing.
it is honestly pathetic to see these global corporations come crying to our government asking for socialist handouts, while offering meagre salaries and horrible working conditions, I looked at levels fyi an they pay software engineers half of the industry average while screaming about labour shortages?
Open Cast Mining needs more Workers. Shaft-Tunneling approach requires less Workers. Better Modernize Mining Industry.
