The car industry is changing, and large displacement naturally aspirated engines are a thing of the past, except, they aren’t. The new Lexus IS500 rejects the status quo and brings back the old school rock and roll hits to the sports sedan market.

  1. Very nice review! Unlike a lot of reviewers, you clearly understand Lexus' ethos behind this car. It's meant to be a smooth daily cruiser during the week and a canyon carver or mountain sweeper on the weekends. My only correction, the competitors listed were not correct. As the IS 500 is not a full-on F car (smaller brake kit and no oil/transmission cooling), it is more aligned with the M340i, S4, and C43. This car was built with me in mind, a serial Lexus owner who values styling and build quality over everything, but wanted a tad bit more power. I personally love the analog old school-ness of this car, a 'Luxury Muscle Car' is the perfect description. Mine is driven 98% of the time in Manual, Sport S+, and the RPMs stay above 4K, so the engine is constantly singing to me. My gas mileage is CRAP as a result, but it's sooooo freaking worth it! NOTE: I had a IS 350 and the difference in gas mileage (normal or spirited driving) is 2 to 3 mpg. God willing, I'm keeping mine forever, it's that good. Thanks for posting!

  2. You can get Sport S+ mode on an IS 350 if it has the F Sport Handling package. However, another difference between the 350 and 500 inside is the darkened background of the F Sport badge on the steering wheel.
Also, the base price you mentioned is for the base IS 500, not the Premium, which is $63,920. At that price, it does, in fact, come with everything, but not at the $59,420 number. Anyways, most of them on sale are going to be about $66,000 because they'll have the BBS wheels more often than not. That is still competitive with an Audi S4 or a BMW M340i, which are this car's true targets in the marketplace. The IS 500 does not have the kit nor the price tag to compete with an M3 or RS5.

The drive modes affecting sound is debatable. There's no active exhaust on this car. There's fake engine sound – which you have disabled for this video, thank you very much. I leave the fake sound off. It sounds fake – enough said, and the car doesn't need it thanks to the intake roar at 3000 RPM or above.

And I do not in any way agree with you saying the 350 is more refined. The V-8 is super smooth (you said "rough", which makes no sense whatsoever… due to it having more cylinders, it is inherently smoother!), and I find the adaptive suspension rides a lot better than the base static suspension you get on an IS 350 (except for F Sport Handling Package models).
