In this latest hardware Vlog, Alex fixes some more things that didn’t go quite to plan in the past.

A CPU and RAM upgrade for the 45homelab HL15 box to a Xeon Silver 4214, fixing some power cabling issues, and installing a replacement LSI HBA card into Alex’s media server.

  1. I'm also in Raleigh, NC and used Kareon cables to do some custom ones for a recent Proxmox server build in a Fractal Define 7 case. Also using an LSI HBA, and an IcyDock 5.25" SSD setup (6 SSD's and 8 spinners, plus 3 nvme drives). Measured, did a quick Photoshop mock up and e-mailed him to iron out the details and had my cables within 2 days. REALLY cleans up a build!

  2. Names: Zaphod/ Dent/ Trillian are good names since you are into Hitchhikers. 'Ford' also… and could use a ford sticker for laughs. 'Dent' could be cheeky for any used server hardware

  3. I am sure people have already said, but as a contract worker at intel… you CAN put the CPU DOWN into the socket first, apply thermal compound on top, then carefully lower the heatsink down the correct way, carfully press it down untill you hear the currier clip into place, then secure the CPU using the required torque spec… which is often about 9lbs for that large of a heatsink/cpu. Socket, heatsink, AND CPU should ALL have Pin ZERO labeled with a little arrow/ triangle

  4. I need to know more about that HDMI KVM switch. I have a Pi Zero 2W and I need to set it up to connect to 2 separate machines. It would be great if we could get more info on that and how you hooked it up to your PiKVM.

  5. You're going with the i5 13600k media server upgrade?. I avoid the k series cpu's because of power draw. The non k is half the power and easier on the motherboard and cooling. Thanks for the vid!

  6. Great video, was fun to watch. I've only been in Homelab fever for a few months and find it exciting and interesting to learn from others and their experiences. Even though I think it would be great to use server hardware like this, I use Lenovo Tiny PCs and am fascinated by what these little boxes can do. Can you please add a link or the name of the stress test tool here in the info box? That would be great. Best regards from Germany

  7. 6/7th gen Optiplex systems should idle around 11-14W. 8/9th are a little less. I have an Inspiron desktop with a quad core 10th gen i3, it idles at 7W. So if you can get any of these boxes cheap you're going to get something that has very good idle wattage out of the box. Changing it that opnsense box seems like a good idea imho.

  8. We use those label makers in the datacenter I work in, as much as I'd love to get one for home I already have one of the lower end brother handheld's and it honestly does the job fine but those industrial ones are the bees knees. After reading about so many people upgrading the CPU's in their prebuilt HL15's I think I'm just going to get the chassis and wait till Epyc Siena motherboards become more available, the 8024P seems like it should handle truenas fine for me at home and then I don't have to deal with any Intel wonkiness. Gotta get my HL15 first though, first world problems! You can actually get BMC to boot in most supermicro boards without a working CPU (to flash the bios for instance), just in case anyone out there ever runs into it.

  9. Thx for the videos and the podcast, much appreciated. Could you do a walkthrough of the pi-kvm with the 8 port and how you got it set up and how you use it? Looking to do something like that myself, but haven't had the headspace to get to it yet.

  10. I have that same label maker and I use it for all things networking as well as Identifying any servers or PCs. I use mine for personal and work use as I am a Sr Systems Admin! Those Brother Label makers rock!!!
