Ditching the Raspberry Pi was a big move for me, especially with a month-long trip to Japan on the horizon and a tech-dependent family of eight in tow. In this video, I dive into the why and how of upgrading our travel tech setup. It's all about ensuring we've got a rock-solid, reliable travel router and NAS to keep everyone connected, entertained, and maybe a bit too online during our adventures. Follow along as I break down the journey from decision to real-world execution, showcasing the trials, errors, and eventual triumphs of finding the perfect travel companion in the tech world.

The leap from the familiar comfort of Raspberry Pi to a new solution was driven by the need for something more robust and capable of handling the demands of multiple devices streaming and accessing data on the go. This isn't just a tech swap; it's a mission to enhance our travel experience significantly. You'll get an inside look at the setup process, how it stands up to the ultimate field test (aka my kids), and whether it can really cut the mustard as the heart of our digital nomad setup. So, if you're into tech, travel, or just love a good family tech drama, this is one you won't want to miss.

  2. The Zima board is more powerful than my school Chromebook. I compared my chromebook's CPU (Celeron N4020) to the Zima board's CPU (Celeron N3450) and the Zima board's CPU is 28% more powerful! Not to mention this thing has twice as much RAM as my Chromebook as well.

  3. Super interesting video. However, I think data security is ignored. Pulling a whole bunch of packages or containers and blindly installing them. Make 2 devices connect to each other over the internet and exchange data between two private networks (chances are there's a 3rd player in this exchange making it all happen). I'd highlight the possible risks of going this route when tinkering with devices like this.

  4. Why don't you just get a Sabrant Rocket 4TB drive, load it with "family" video files and then you plug it into your GLint router, and there you go. That way you can swap out movies and shows when relevant and then everything just works easier for you. I've heard Plex has become TERRIBLE in recent years.

  5. I just took a road trip before this video came out with my family and did the EXACT same thing but with a mini-pc I had sitting around. I don't get free things from cool companies so a $50 HP from eBay worked just the same. I have the GL-MT3000, and a 4TB SSD in the PC. eliminated a couple moving parts. The router runs off of the USB-C port so I only need the one power plug for the whole kit and caboodle. It was the most compact solution I could come up with even with more time than the night before.

Glad I came up with the same solution! I feel more confident now that there really wasn't a better solution than what I came up with.

  6. Thanks man. This was a fun video.

What the deal with pfsense again? It's been a minute since i visited anything pfs. Hope nothing vuln related given that one of your other youtube videos teaches visitors how to set up a home network with pfs on a protectli vault device is still out there.

  7. Cool choice! I'm actually, trying to do something the same, but in a slightly different way. To keep Zima board as NAS at home and use Wireguard as a server and Cloudflare as secured tunnels to provide my own VPN to be everywhere like at home and get access anywhere to my home resources.
Cloudflare works best but with the Wireguard server, I have some issues. Would be great to get a guide on how to make it work from someone experienced. like you.

  8. I don't travel much, but would be cool to have or shoot just to have in the office to connect back home vs setting a tunnel on the firewalls lol But this would be more handy for the portalable camera i bring with me to the hotel rooms, you never know who is in your room using flipper to gain access and what might be stolen

  9. Just remove the installation shields on the PCIE cards, please, instead of bending them. It's just two screws on the board! (and maybe an antenna or two…)
