  1. I am not excited about it but what are they supposed to do? How are they going into continuously make money to support their employees and product improvement? Eventually you run out of customers to sell to.

  2. Wow this is not cool. I love unraid but not a sub model like this. I would be ok with charging for big version jumps with some discount model for newer purchasers etc. unRAIDs development is too slow and riddled with bugs to justify this took me months to find out why my server was crashing after 6.12. I thought they would charge for the online features like remote access and backup which savvy users can setup on their own or pay for ease of use.

  3. I am not that surprised as I was thinking of this when I installed Unraid for the first time a month ago.
So I had this in mind during the free period and did buy a license a few days ago.
I do pay monthly or yearly for other services and can do that for new installs of Unraid as long as it is in my budget.

  4. I'm okay with it.
I have 2 grandfathered licences now but unraid's value is worth the subscription model IMO.
I pay subscriptions for things I get far less value out of.
Devs gotta eat too, if they lose some customers because of it that's the risk they make.

However, if I was a new user today. Would I get involved in the TrueNAS community instead. Probably.
But will they have a free modelForever too?
    Who knows
