  1. Are you maybe considering to move away from Slackware to a more "modern" OS like debian or a linux distro in general? Thanks anyway for the transparency and for what is worth, the yearly subscription is welcome because the community is the best ever and Unraid is a great platform and worth every penny! Cheers from Italy

  2. So you can buy a one year extension? What are the options for year 3? Are Unraid servers not expected to last more then 2 years? What year do you hit parity with lifetime pricing option? What about security updates? Unless you go after grandfathered I don't see how this works to your advantage long term.

  3. recently switch to unRAID after long consideration, 30day trial, got me hooked. Super supportive of the new way forward. We've all paid for OS upgrades years ago, and made no gripes. Looking forward to the new (TBD) price plans as i'm looking to build another unRAID server for offsite backup. Really a beautiful product. keep up the awesome work!

  4. So if I understand correctly, future keys will be less expensive than what is offered today, but then will require the extra fee (after a year of install) to extend support to any new version?

  5. Thank you for your transparancy and explaination. It seems the community as a whole (me included) are in support of this. However, the community needs to understand how security updates and bug fixes will be addressed for new users who choose not to buy the new version/features.

Imho, these should be pushed out to everyone. Only feature updates should be paid for.

  6. Great to hear that the decision to change license costs was thought about for so very long and the priorities to continue to improve the product was given priority. Been using unRAID since 2015 and looking forward to keep using it.

  7. I've been a long time NAS user, I can't believe I waited to long to use Unraid, best decision I've ever mad. Such a useful piece of software. I would easily sign up for annual subscription just to support this great company and product. Thank you and keep up the great work!

  8. I didn't quite understand the bit about users in the trial period during the switchover. If you're in the trial period when the new pricing model begins, will you be allowed to use the classic pricing model or are you forced to use the new pricing model if you decide to purchase Unraid at the end of your trial period?

  9. I understand companies must be profitable, but I think must be a difference between upgrades and "patches". Security updates must be always free! We have the risk to get a big security hole with the last update of the year, and we will be forced to upgrade to fix that. If that's the way, I probably move to the "forever free without licenses by now" like OpenMediaVault or TrueNas Scale. That people charges for support (like you do) and charges business customers (not your target at the moment), so they can keep a free product for home users.

  10. I am so looking forward to the Friends networking. Having somewhere other than the public cloud to use as a backup. It means I can act as the backup to my client's systems for the cost of a harddrive, electricity and bandwidth.

  11. Really happy that they are bringing support for Intel Arc GPU's. I upgraded my server about 6 months ago, been waiting for this. As far as the price change, I'm disappointed but I understand the change. This is a great podcast.

  12. Hi Ed, Tom & Tiffany. I've been using Unraid (2 Pro keys) for ten years or so. What a great Uncast episode Ed. I've had Spencer in my contacts list for years. How wonderful it is to see the whole Limetech family and who everyone is.. Tiffany is right , once you connect the names vs the forum ID's it all makes sense. I wish you all well in the new year and keep up the great wok.. Unraid OS has been great for my Video library and family picture needs.

  13. Interesting video great product again like others brought to my attention by Linus and now own 2 pro licenses – it’s unique disk use rather than raid is the key feature for my home use and great but zfs over rated for home use

  14. Hey guys just want to make it clear that I don't give a damn of the reasoning, moving to any subscription model instantly will make me stop utilizing your product. There's other options, just as robust, that are absolutely fucking free with zero cost.

  15. Honestly, Linus tech tips brought me to you guys and I’m so glad I bought a pro license in the past so I don’t have to do the reoccurring and because it’s a great product. I usually get worried when a company comes up with the idea of going subscription based however you guys seem to have done a crazy good job and I definitely feel like you guys did what’s best for the customer and the company. I’m excited to see what the future holds! I’ll probably spin up a few more servers once I’m no longer a student and can afford some newer parts and licenses. Unraid makes life so much more simple and fun!

  16. The security updates should be separate from features. I feel in the long term unraid maybe known as an insecure option with legacy systems running old versions due to financial reasons.

  17. Great video as always Ed! Thanks for doing this interview and sharing about unraids story and future plans also thank you Tom and Tiffany for addressing everyone's concerns about the new pricing and changes in unraids future much appreciated 💖👍😎JP

  18. This video sold me on Unraid , I just purchased a Pro license. I have outgrown a Synology 918+, and purchased a old SuperMicro SuperServer with over a dozen drives. Target is Plex media server with a GPU. I’ve been struggling with Truenas Scale trying to get *arr apps running and their support. I have been hesitant to go Unraid due to the cost vs Truenas free, and the wierd USB key.
But this video shows how much you value your community, and have hired from the community. Yes, price was a concern, but with this approach of engagement with the community and not being a*hole on the forums is really noble. So even if I don’t use the license, it’s a good investment in the company with this type of engagement with their community.
Will ZFS in Unraid 7 have an upgrade path from Unraid 6? I ask because I’ll have to wipe and reinstall the OS on my server anyway, and I’m fine with waiting some time for it to land.
Great conversation, and you sold me (along with Ibracorp and Spaceinvaderone).
