Buying a 2013 Mac Pro in 2024? I need HELP! ๐Ÿ˜‚

“Constant Geekery”

As part of my slow descent into madness, I find myself trawling eBay looking for a 2013 “trash can” Mac Pro… not because I need one, or because it makes any kind of practical sense in 2024… what is it about this iconic Mac that keeps me coming back for more punishment?!

  1. Haha! I just bought one on eBay yesterday! I always wanted one – as others have said such a shame Apple didnโ€™t use this or a similar design for the Mac Studio (even without the internal modularity)

  2. It's hard to clean these of dust entirely, isn't it? Gotta take it completely apart, a huge detailed project, to clean the dust from these used units, not just lifting the top and blowing that area out, right?

  3. I need LOTS OF GPU for ADOBE BRIDGE 100% preview EDITING huge amounts of ssds and HDs with huge image folders ( 2000+ 120MB Raw files ) and files up to 4.2GB 16bit files >>> which one to buy ? what graphics card ? how many cores ? what ssd model make ? what else ?????

  4. I bought one, and iโ€™m loving it, old school x86 forever, for music production is perfect and for programming with java, python and C, works great with sql, i donโ€™t need more, oh yes dual boot with linux and work for other 10 years.

  5. I upgraded all the way from a 2012 MacBook Pro (non-retina, large matte screen) stuck on macOS Catalina all the way to this 2013 Mac Pro (now stuck on macOS Monterey, but at least Turbotax ran on it [well, this year]!). A world of difference (in performance) for 10x lower price than for what this machine once sold! Maxed it out. Lightroom performs far better than it did on the MacBook. Sure, the latest Macs are great, but this is still a steal and perfectly usable. Might run a little hot (though quiet), but it's still as cool looking as it ever was!

  6. I like this design also … BUT really want to M silicone in first aluminium iMac chassis …. love those curve edges instead of sharp that came later … and new iMac as you have? That's just ugly and unappealing

  7. Just got one for $180 to replace a ACEMAGICIAN MINI PC. The PC was a nice little computer, but being limited to Windows really didn't work out for me. Plus because the components in the MINI PC were too closely put together, the headphone port started buzzing a lot for no reason at all. Don''t really need it to do video editing or music processing, so it should work fine for me for browsing etc. 16GB RAM, 500 GB SSD. Upgradable to 128GB RAM, 1-2TB SSD, 8-core CPU. Pretty sure I can get to Sonoma as well through the Open Core Legacy Patcher. Plus it's cute as hell. Like it better than the cube. Way more useful than my iMac G3 iLamp, which also looks good on my desk.

  8. I got a 12 core d500, the 12 core was an upgrade I did myself. Music production as a hobby was my main motivation plus lust that I always had since trash can first came out. I started with Logic Pro trial, but it did not do it for me, although lots of free virtual instruments. I went to a Studio One subscription and got a good start in making some small productions. I got a Steinberg audio interface and as it came with Cubase I tried that and split my time between both. I replace the audio interface with a Focusrite thunderbolt. Later I wanted to experiment with video music production so I switched to Digital Producer and that is where I am now. It is extremely powerful for the money and I can use it to make some hobby youtube videos. I shoot the video and use DaVinci to edit the video with intro and then import the video into Digital Producer where I do music and voice over and final edit. I have Native Instruments keyboard and Maschine Studio and use a lot of their instruments and software as well.

  9. I felt that same bug since I first saw one. The more people hated it, the more I wanted it.

It is a guilty pleasure. I just scored one today locally. I am looking forward to messing around with it.

  10. I have a 6 core 32gb ram which I open core legacy to ventura & it runs flawlessly imo, if you have the money to go m1-m3 id def go that route, but if not this is the most powerful mac computer youโ€™ll run across eBay has these things for $300 you can swap out the cpu, ram, & go m2 ssd if you want.. I honestly donโ€™t know why it gets the bad reviews that it does.. these YouTubers get paid to promote and endorse the latest greatest thing but this thing is a beast & thanks to open core legacy it lives on..

  11. Apple got crucified for the Mac Pro 2013 yet got lauded for the Mac Studio. The former has upgradeable CPU, RAM and SDD; the latter has ZERO upgradeability and looks like a lunch box!!!ย

I call my beloved Mac Pro 2013 my "Classic" Mac Studio.

  12. I still got my Mac Pro 6.1, 8 core CPU, D700 Graphics , 128 GB RAM. Iโ€™m a professional filmmaker I shoot only in Apple Prores, and I have zero complaint.

  13. For me itโ€™s nostalgia. This Mac Pro holds a special place in my heart just because of its design. Iโ€™m playing with the idea of buying one just because I want it.

  14. I would love to see you modify an M1 Mac mini to replace the innards of this computer. Maybe get a powered USB-C hub in there to replace the thunderbolt panel

  15. Great video! I always loved this machine and back in the day, could never have afforded one. Your video echoes all my sentiments. I now do simulation modeling and while there's better approaches, I've been cruising eBay for similar nostalgic reasons, partially just to offload models to the Cylinder Mac Pro and free up my M1 Max MBP.

  16. I love mine, an eight core 3.0GHz with 32G. It was so cheap, it was literally an experiment to see if I could move all the way forward in MacOS. I did not realize such an advanced Mac existed until I finally bought it. Silent, small, lightweight and sort of beautiful. It is an ultra-capable Pro Tools computer, replacing my 3.46GHz Hex processor cheese grater. I have been able to use one fewer flight cases for my system due to this replacement. I will probably get a second for backup. So happy with it.

  17. so are you saying that you been having issues making music with the m1 computers? or is it because there is plugins that don't work? so in the 2013 you can make music a lot better? or can you explain why you want to go back? great videos I watch all the ones talking about the 2013 Mac Pro you have made so great job!

  18. This 2013 Mac Pro is great! I use my Mac Pro 5.1 2010 as an old audio recorder, Mac OS Mountain Lion system, everything works perfectly, without breaks or crashes. I tried with opencore but it made my mac terribly stupid, sometimes with unexpected crashes etc…I abandoned the idea of โ€‹โ€‹opencore. With each advance Apple makes in its operating system and hardware, things become more complex and full of crashes, even if it's the M1 or M3. I made great music and will continue to make it on my old Mac Pro.

  19. I am thinking of one also. Mostly interested in performance with canonโ€™s digital photo professional (DPP) software. Rosetta 2 does a poor job with this software and my M1 Max Mac Studio is sluggish when I try to edit eos r5 raw files. Activity monitor shows the cores are not fully utilized when running on ARM. In contrast my ancient intel iMac shows 100% use of all cores.
I think Rosetta easily subtracts 25% or more performance with this software and canon shows no intention of making a native ARM version.
I would love to see how the trash can Mac Pro handles DPP which is very CPU heavy (almost no GPU use). I would also like to do some light gaming with my kids under windows. Parallels just canโ€™t run some games. And while my Mac is primarily for creative and work projects I would love to see how it handles modern games too.
