Cisco UCS Manager + UCSb-200-M4 + VMware vSAN

I am new to the UCS Manager + Systems Engineer role in general.

We have 2 UCS 5108’s + 2 Fabric Interconnect Pairs (total 4 FI’s) + 12 UCSB-200-M4 (6 per chassis). We are in the process of trying to configure a VMware vSAN that spans both chassis. We have extremely limited space, but were told that it would be enough for what we need. (New equipment has been planned…but who knows when it will be purchased/arrive).

I am trying to find a good guide that explains the steps needed to configure this. All of the guides I have found have been for rackmount servers (not blades). The VMware side seems fairly straightforward and has been completed outside of the networking component. The problem I am running into now is that it seems I need more vNICs on the Cisco side than are available, but I am not getting clear information as to how many are possible. I am hoping it is just my configuration that is messed up and not a hardware limitation.

Following this super old guide: [https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/solutions/collateral/data-center-virtualization/desktop-virtualization-solutions-vmware-horizon-view/whitepaper_C11-732332.html](https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/solutions/collateral/data-center-virtualization/desktop-virtualization-solutions-vmware-horizon-view/whitepaper_C11-732332.html)

They recommend creating two vSAN vNIC templates (1 to FI-A, and 1 to FI-B). However, if I apply those templates, I am given the error “There are not enough resources overall connection-placement not enough vNIC available”. It seems I may be able to apply one of those templates, but then it will only point to one FI. I already have 2 other vNIC’s created for other interfaces on the VMs.

I’m sure this is a hell of a lot simplier than I am making it, but I am new to the role and trying to figure it out. **This is staying in a lab environment**

UCSM Version: 3.2

VMware ESXi Enterprise 6.5

VMware vCenter 6.5

2 SSD’s per Blade + 1 SD card per Blade for ESXi

I am also in the process of going through John Nash’s video on PluralSight.

Any help is appreciated.

  1. You can create a bunch of vNICs in the UCS environment, so you shouldn’t have a problem creating more, but you’ll have to find out what is causing the placement error.

With only 2 disks per host, one will be a cache disk and one a capacity, so you won’t get a whole ton of storage, and vSAN is priced per CPU regardless if 2 disks or 20 disks, so do a cost comparison of using this existing equipment vs buying 3-4 new rack mount hosts that can hold more disks.

  2. Do you have the RAID12G SAS Controller for your blades or using PCIe SSD’s? It will NOT be a pleasant experience if you’re attaching those SSD’s to the embedded SATA controller
