I was going to show how to install a rack mount server case. I just ran into problems which is par for the corse. This happens sometimes when you buy things used off of the internet. Sometimes it works just not thins time.

  1. I've had reasonable luck with the NavePoint Universal 1U Rack Mount 4-Post Shelf Rails. They provide support front to back which is good for deeper rack mount chassis. The down side is they tend to tilt down which makes the width at the top a bit tight. I've had to pull the inner rails from Supermicro cases to get them to fit. I've tried a few brands of shelf, but they had lips that blocked the unit below or were too short to support the server. I've just bit the bullet and bought the rails meant for the chassis (and rack — all my Supermicro adjust just fine for my two racks 24" & 33").

  2. I experienced the same issue at work when having a mismatch between the depth of the rack and rails and the depth of the server or other gear. In a few cases we used a sort of angle bracket bolted to the inside of the uprights and running front to back on each side. So there was no solid shelf, just the narrow (2 inch wide?) strip on each side to support the server or whatever.

  3. This makes me feel slightly better about only using the front rack ears for my 2U boxes that hold old desktop hardware in my lab.

Rail length is a crapshoot sometimes, been burned on it at work before.
