VMware

Under the storage configuration tab we see two options “Datastore” and “Devices” . Can someone explain the difference between them. Thanks in advance.

  1. A device is any storage device (hard drives, sad, iscsi, etc) datastores are when you make a VMFS partition and prepare the drive to be used.

  2. The datastores are your VMFS, NFS, or vSAN volumes whereas devices are the underlying physical disks/LUNs

  3. Devices will show the DataStore devices but also other storage devices like the ones used for RDM’s or the control LUN (256) for 3par virtual volumes support and so on.

  4. On the datastores tab, you can see devices that have been made into datastores with vmfs. In the device column you can see the device. In the devices tab, you can see all devices. These could be boot luns, datastores, rdms, or even devices that aren’t associated to anything.
