Windows 10 VM install stops at boot

Hi everyone,

First post and VM noob in general, so please be gentle. I’ve been trying to remedy this issue, but I can’t seem to find a more current solution.

I have a simple Windows 7 Pro VM on a vSphere 6.5 update 1 (Build 5969303) server acting essentially as just network storage for my company. I want to update it to Windows 10 Pro using media creation tool ISO. The process starts out fine, but after the first reboot, it gets stuck on the blue Windows logo during boot. VMWare Tools are installed and running, version 10279.

Can anyone offer some expertise on how to complete the update? Please let me know what other information I can provide, and thank you in advance!

  1. Sounds more like a messed up Windows update. Only thing I could think of is the VM still thinks it should be compatible with Windows 7 instead of Windows 10.

I wouldn’t suggest upgrading anyways. Just rebuild it.

  2. Build a new one, attach the old disk to it and share folder again.

It’s better if Your data isnt on the same volume as the os (makes moves and upgrades exactly like this much easier)

How do you backup this data?

  3. Just install a new vm as windows 10 and use the wet tool to transfer everything. Way easier and more stable. BTW use the windows 7 wet tools on the windows 10 machine they work fine
