  1. i actually got a fujitsu amilo A1650G last year. since then, i figured, since i had it lying around, i could use it for school. its pretty slow, but it actually works perfectly fine and i can do my coding and computer class stuff with no problems (usually). windows xp, while impractical, is still totally usable.

  2. You need a better browser such as MyPal 68 or MiniBrowser. I still use XP as my main OS in 2024, and have absolutely 0 issues with anything. MiniBrowser is a bit better than MyPal, but MyPal is lighter weight for older machines.

  3. To my recollection, Internet Explorer was only fully discontinued in August 2022 because it was so widely used back in the 2000s that many websites, online applications, databases, etc. relied on it. In some countries like China, it was more problematic because said countries switched off from IE6 later and hence apps were even more reliant on it, so Microsoft had to provide support for Internet Explorer 6 (released in 2001) until August 2016. Microsoft Edge has an "Internet Explorer mode" to accommodate legacy pages.

  4. I have a full XP desktop I work on/play with as a fun hobby thing and I figured I'd leave a few notes.

    > I load big software on with a USB drive which I had no issues with, small stuff I just download to the machine

    > Ethernet works fine

    > It's not ungodly to find old graphics drivers for era appropriate cards. I personally have a GeForce 6600GT

    > go-to browser these days is called mypal, which is a Firefox fork. I don't sign into anything important on it but casual browsing is generally alright

    > Internet Archive has pretty much everything else you could ever need

Overall it's actually still shockingly "usable" with some creativity, patience, and expectation management. Same goes for Vista which I still think is underrated

  5. Windows XP will be good forever as an offline OS, but too many TLS certificates are expired and websites are broken for online use to be practical. Even with browsers like Mypal and the various Chromium ports Javascript is just too complex these days for Windows XP to handle. Then there are services like Cloudflare are that actively blocking Windows XP.

  6. I would actually use Mypal instead of Firefox, it's a fork of a more recent Firefox version backported to work with older versions of Windows. I use it on all my older computers I play retro games on and I've never had any issues with it. There's also some really cool projects for XP like Legacy Update and Protoweb that you should look at!

P.S. I vividly remember playing the XP Tour on repeat as a kid, can't be the only one 😅

  7. I mean, if you just do some text editing with built in WordPad and notepad, draw with Microsoft paint and browse the internet, or code, it is a solid system. Only thing holding me back would be security as it no longer receive security updates.
