Is Palworld going to go BROKE from server expenses? The CEO of Pocketpair claims that their server costs will be close to a half a million US dollars this month alone, and claims that if this continues the company might go bankrupt. But they just raked in $200 million in sales? So are they looking to add microtransactions, raise the price or yes to both?

  1. It took me a week to set up a server on a Ubuntu vm, if it wasn't such a headache to set one up I'm sure a lot of people would self host on a old computer. It would take a lot of pressure off the official servers if they made a flat pack or something, just open the port and run it. Having to deal with steamcmd was a absolute headache, then tuning the settings in the .ini file etc, then their was a issue with my default file structure, I swear.

  2. 'Dedicated servers' being the key words there. All PocketPair has to do, is either:
A: Charge people who want to play on a dedicated server, to rent the servers.
B: Get rid of the 'official servers'.
    C: A combination of both.

But the game will never be completely 'shut down'. Not when people can still play Single Player.

  3. Switch and Steam are identical market sizes. Both at 132 million. (You assumed Pokemon only being on Switch would hurt it while "everyone with a PC" could buy Palworld, but the market sizes are the same. 2 differences are cost and age demographic of Steam vs. Switch users.)

  4. I think the best option for pocketpair here would be to do what minecraft does but without microsoft accounts, have servers have a monthly cost of 5 dollars but local peer2peer multiplayer games still be free.

  5. I hope this does get resolved this game is fun with people, however online servers are expensive and is a huge reason why single player or Co-op, multiplayer limited to local areas, seems more appalling , because online games do have the threat of shut down if the servers go off.

There are many ways this can go but I hope they find a long term plan, one that keeps the game in their control.

  6. Steam tax ($10 gone), local taxes, investor and loan payments with interests… In future : cr*pload of new hires to finish the game, their wages… They get to keep pennies of the $30 price tag.

  7. It's 6 million a year so like 50 cent per year for each game sold ? ( 12 million units sold according to google )
That will cost you alot when game is like 30 . If people keep playing it for like 6 years. That will cost 10 % or 3 bucks .

  8. It was a joke… jesus fucking christ… if the server cost was actually a concern (it isn't that've made well over $200 million in profit so far and its only costing $6 million a year at its peak popularity it will be lower in a year or two) then the CEO also wouldn't have said how he ordered their server provider to keep the servers up under any cost… if it was ACTUALLY a financial concern no business is going to let themselves go bankrupt over it… that's asinine.

They can run the game for a decade+ and not even come close to going bankrupt even if they never sell another game, expansion, etc. Anything else is doom spreading and ridiculous.

  9. Funny how the ENTIRE comment section can't even imagine that
    1. The game ALREADY has offline mode.
    2. The game ALREADY can play on self host server, not even a "mod".
    3. The official server cost isn't even that big of a deal for them.
