The tool pushed both sets of pins(8/8)past the sheer. The key kicked just the upper set of pins(4/8).

Ah, so that's how a comb pick works. Shoves the key pins above the shear line as well. Seems like it would be relatively simple to prevent this kind of exploit by simply limiting the max travel so that isn't possible.

I don't think this is how it works but I'll do my best. You need to open all the doors so that the bigger door opens. Picking a lock normally is like opening a door until it hits the wall, however picking a lock like this is like opening a door until it clips through the wall
The key goes in smoother and comes out but the comb one you have to wiggle around a little bit for it to get inside
