Replica wheels might look the same, but with designs specific to a forged manufacturing process being reproduced as casts instead many purchasers are asking for trouble, especially on track.

  1. Seems worth mentioning there are all kinds of different casting processes these days – some of which are a HUGE improvement in strength over traditional "cast" wheels – negating much of the "they're weaker" argument.

For example, "rotary forged" or "flow formed" wheels are hybrids. They cast the disc, but leave the outer edge extra heavy. Then they rotate that heavy edge between rollers to form the barrel of the wheel – like making a bowl out of clay on a potters wheel. The result is a wheel that's 99% the goodness of a true forged wheel at 30% the price.

There are also high-pressure castings that offer significant improvement over traditional castings.

  2. I tracked with the same set of Rota wheels for almost a decade and never ran into any issues with them. While everything you're saying is factual, it doesnt mean reps are junk.

  3. “Less dense material” not necessarily the case. While it technically does increase density, it is such an insurmountably small difference that it’s not meaningful at all in the application of wheels.
If that were the case, then forged wheels would be heavier. Forging alters the grain direction of the metal. This results in more uniform grain structure and more consistent strength properties with much fewer weak spots.
