Backing up TrueNAS SCALE datasets to Proxmox Backup Server

Even as my homelab relies heavily on Proxmox to function, I still use bare-metal TrueNAS for a lot of general purpose file storage, and want to back up all of my data to the same backup system. Since Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) integrates so well with Proxmox Virtual Environment, I want to push data from the TrueNAS system to PBS as well. Here, I install Proxmox Backup Client on TrueNAS SCALE and configure it to backup my datasets.

This isn’t a perfect solution, and isn’t officially supported by TrueNAS, but the software installation and changes to the base system are minimal and can easily be restored if TrueNAS removes it during an update. Since Proxmox doesn’t integrate particularly well with a TrueNAS based backup server, using PBS makes sense if you are primarily backing up data from Proxmox’s local or clustered storage, and also using PBS to backup TrueNAS consolidates all backup management in one place.
