  1. I have a mini ITX PC with 4 drives, and then added a USB 3 SATA enclosure like Matt was talking about to add additional storage. Works really well for me, and they fit on 2 shelves of an IKEA Kallax cupboard. Also my understanding is USB-3 is fine for SATA speeds, but like Matt I don't care as long as it is fast enough to stream my video files.

Runs my Emby media server and Nextcloud instances perfectly.

  2. I run old servers in my home. But I would not recommend them. They are power hungry and loud. For better efficiency and compute power, look into modern consumer hardware, and if you need extra drives than your case can hold then look into an HBA for an external JBOD enclosure. It will allow you to connect drives outside of your case.

  3. If I were to build a server for media, at the moment it would probably be either just a recent gen intel cpu w an igpu or (preferably) an AM5 in eco mode with an arc a380. Other than dealing with nvidia nonsense, intel will chew through transcoding tasks with ease. The sparkle a380s dont even have an external 8 pin, just MB power and arc cards have worked seamlessly for me on wayland for production stuff.

  4. Since 2019 I combine my desktop en server in one $349 PC. I run a minimal install of Ubuntu 23.10 on OpenZFS using Virtualbox. The minimal install only has some simple utilities like settings; updater; calculator; gedit; file manager; terminal and Firefox. All my other apps I run in Virtualbox VMs. I have 6 VMs for the social media apps; banking (encrypted); multimedia apps; a VM for try-outs; a jukebox (Windows XP) and Windows 11 Pro, in case I need it. The VMs get access to the relevant Host folders. The HW is: Ryzen 3 2200G; 16GB; 512GB NVME; 2TB HDD cached by a 128GB SSD (sata).
