One space I think that really needs some more competition is the NAS space. So, UGreen has decided to throw their hat into the ring… and it sure is far…

  1. I'm not sure why they're using Kickstarter when they could have done a pre-order on their own site. Maybe they have a deal with Kickstarter or the marketing is really good. For the pricing I think they're selling it pretty close to BOM+assembly judging by what I saw in this video so if they get a lot of returns they're probably going to eat it. The actual price seems resonable once you account for software development, handling, customer support, etc. + a little profit on top.

  2. It's more secure if you can't paste your password because then you'll have to choose a lower quality password that you have to remember. I switch to Bitwarden because LastPass stopped working on a lot of sites. Among other reasons and the UI just kept getting worse and worse.

  3. Its not hard to build your own Nas running trunas and unraid. people need to stop forking stupid money for abysmal performance/price. minimal features and inability to upgrade or expand.

  4. I don't want to be that person but I would like to point out that there are multiple issues that I see with some of the information in this video.

    1. DXP480T Plus is NOT a single bay NAS. It is a Flash NAS, meant to use only NVMe SSD for fast storage. 4 x NVMe SSDs to be precise, which is why it is DXP4 (the numbers in the models for almost all NAS systems indicate the number of drives).
    2. MSRP prices are not "extremely" high. You mentioned that they are "skyrocketing" when you got to the 8-Bay model but just go and see how much a Synology 8-Bay NAS costs. Which btw. also has a much weaker CPU/Performance overall for a higher price.
    3. The whole Kickstarter is not for funding but this is something that was already pointed out in other comments. It is more about advertising than funding.
    4. Changing the Boot Storage. The page clearly says that your unit has eMMC storage. eMMC is not an SSD and it is also soldered to the motherboard. That is standard for all eMMC. So there should not be any surprises there.
    5. Changing thermal paste. It's a low powered intel CPU, not a gaming or high powered server CPU. Let's be real there is no need to change thermal paste on a device like this. How many people with a prebuilt NAS like Synology or QNAP change their thermal paste?
    6. Using a VPN with a NAS is not quiet a straightforward process as you want your NAS to access the internet using a VPN but also at the same time be available on your home network. There are workaround but even Synology does not support a VPN solution like the one I image you want to have. The best solution here is to limit certain apps to go through a VPN but again this is something that no prebuilt NAS as far as I know fully supports.
    7. Mobile App not existing and OS not being fully finished/things showing up in Chinense. For a product that is still being actively worked on and prepared this should not be a surprise. The majority of things in beta have their issues and are not fully functioning. I think that here there should be no expectations for the moment as it is still early.
    8. Transferring speeds. Already saw some comments mentioning the fact that the HDDs are in fact CMR and not SMR, so that is not the issue. Also you said that the speeds are nowhere near close to the 10Gig that they advertise but in the beginning you mentioned that you don't have a 10Gig setup anyway. Honestly, the slower speeds can be caused by so many things that there is no need to list everything here. But it goes from the network setup that you have, all the way to CPU and different hardware components that can also bottle neck the performance.
    9. Idle power draw. I would have preferred if it was mentioned what "idle" means. Does it mean the CPU is idle, or does it mean that the HDDs are also currently idle and not spinning. Those 4 drives alone can add an additional 20W+ if they are still spinning.
    10. Loading a 3rd party OS is something that basically most companies out there will not officially support because who knows what that 3rd party os can do to the hardware, it was after all not officially tested. So there is nothing surprising there. Loading a 3rd party OS is however possible and there are no issues with that, as long as the OS works well with the hardware. I already saw some comments pointing out what the issues were with the way you setup the OS, so I will not get deeper into it.
    11. In terms of the conclusion about pricing and building your own NAS. I always say to that, show me a DYI NAS that has the same amount of power efficiency as well as space efficiency (aka such small form factor) and I will be sold on that.

I hope you are not taking this as a personal attack. I just wanted to clear some things out for the people watching this video.

  5. They scammed me for a Bluetooth dongle on aliexpress. Wanted to connect 2 ps4 controllers and play on pc. Listing said that it supports multiple connections but it didnt work at all (one connection alone was horrible too, input delay was very big). In their response they said that it supports multiple connections but only with different devices but not of the same type and didn't refund me. So I never used this crap again. Cheap 2$ bt donggle works better.

  6. Lol another @terramaster 😂
Just send hardware with bare minimum software features.
Just use it as samba file sharing. 😅

    35Watt in idle is high.

Disable watchdog in bios that is reseting the device when ugreen os is detected..

  7. Thanks alot for this teardown. I realy wished ugreen did this.
I understand some of the points at the end of your video from the perspective of an us american, but in germany you pay alot for electricity at the moment, so u may save some money at the point of buying an old processor but paying for it later. Having good hardware with a n100, replacable fan, ssd, ram (unlike apple) is just appealing for me.
I realy like that you at least can install your own os on this and there is still less effort needed than doing the same on a synology. There are alot of good os on the marked, maybe they shouldnt ship their own debian based china os at all and just make the product even cheaper.
The price discussion it self seems to me kind of useless right now. Ugreen products always had big discounts over the whole year being, most of the time being in a good price per value spot, so i wouldnt be much concerned about this product here either.

  8. Not flexible like Unraid or Synology. I’m good.

Also all WD red plus and pro are CMR not SMR. Not the reason you don’t have great transfer speeds.

  9. I really don't get why NAS's get astronomically more expensive the more drives you add, I get the processor upgrades but you really don't need to be charging $1500 for a 8 bay nas when you can run 16+ drives off that hardware easily

  10. As someone who pays way too much for electricity in a country with one of the biggest hydroelectrics power plants..
I would think about return of investment in the power savings..

  11. I like @TwistedMe13, @waralo191 and @alexpio comments. Production is a dime/perfect with profit and demand… The OS is difficult to adapt. Manufacturing can be a very satisfying group/team project, at any scope, Ugreen has used….

  12. I put in a preorder for the all SSD one because i got a few ssd's laying around and that would be wonders for a mini virtualization box if i can get windows or unraid or proxmox on the main ssd. I really hope they keep the bios unlocked like that as while i love it for the nas, id really want it to be kept open for more

  13. With Kickstarter they don't actually have any obligation to deliver anything, if something goes wrong with production. Stuff like warranty might also be handled differently. It also serves as a form of advertising, with Kickstarter listing top selling projects at the top.

  14. Sometimes it isn't the steps involved in DIY; it is the time. I enjoy tinkering with computers so I know Proxmox and Open Media Vault. Other people might not enjoy it or not have enough time to get it working. Nothing wrong with that. I have a friend who loves home improvement projects, which I hate. Others enjoy fixing their own cars. Not everyone has the time to be an expert in everything.

  15. Why would you get this over a synology?

It's solid, mature, easy to use and easy to disassemble to change the thermal paste and clean dust.

I used to have one and it was great, I have a custom built unraid nas now but if I wanted to go back to something simpler I'd 100% go back to Synology.

  16. There is a setting in UEFI you have to turn off so it doesn't restart when it's not detecting default OS running.
Advanced > WatchDog Settings > WatchDog Control > Disabled
That's what I get for posting before watching whole video … you found it 😀
And you don't have to remove the SSD, it is enough to rename EFI folder on it to get to UEFI.

  17. I used to own a Drobo – the 4 bay looks kind of like it. It was expensive, proprietary, and also very slow. Drobo had their own OS and it was very limited – but you could also argue it was simple and easy to use as a result. Maybe this is what uGreen is going for. Personally, I will stick with unRaid (also like TrueNAS).

  18. Loved the teardown, gotta give UGREEN props for potential repairability and upgrades, even if it's against their intent. nice that replacing/upgrading the fan is also an option if silence has a high preference, such as in a shared office/bedroom option. I don't like that their site lists USB speeds as "theoretical". that's just the maximum USB spec, it would be nicer if they would guarantee 5 or 10 Gbps. It's also interesting, if confusing, for the front panel to be listed as supporting thunderbolt4 on the 6800/8800 models. Can we use a standard laptop dock for additional usb/sd ports? can it hose an e-GPU?
Docker support would be wonderful if they can get it running well, and as user-friendly as the rest of their software appears to be, otherwise I'm in support of Proxmox. Would be in favor of a system setting for "reboot to bios", even if it includes a warning that your unit will no longer be supported for software warranty, only hardware failure.

  19. What makes the NAS completely obsolete for me is that they want to force you to use their own OS. And if you install anything other, they void your warranty. So yeah, I'm sticking with my Dell Optiplex. Great Review anyway. You actually showed what i wanted to do with this. Keep it up.

  20. A lot of Chinese companies like GPD always launch on kickstarter or similar sites to get a big order upfront, probably also to gauge demand. Video creator is kind of nasty, they seemed reasonable that they had release dates for a video, cause it's not even out yet. It would be different if it was shipping to customers

  21. Definitely interested in something like this for family and friends that ask for a cheap NAS that just want something that'll store family photos that they don't have to kerfuddle with Synology's crazy HDD practices. Guess the kickstarter is so Ugreen can steal Synology's homework when it comes to the UI.Either way, loved the video. Gonna go back and watch the rest of your stuff because your editing is on point and you're not drawing things out to feed the algorithm.
