  1. I dont know how to use the Terminal in Unraid, but I still have set up an awesome server with jellyfin, storage, vpn, home assistant and some more… so dont be be scared away because of the Terminal!(I have used it maybe 1 time following a guide)

You forgot to show the Docker tab when talking about apps! Unraid have built in docker, so most of the apps are docker apps. You could use docker on windows, Ubuntu, linux or wherever to deploy apps. Super cool! 😊

Unraid is abit more work sometimes, but its also more rewarding and fun when you manage to do something yourself! There is a ton of good youtube guides on unraid to follow and learn😊

  2. UnRAID gets my vote from the two. I don't care about first party apps, as in my experience there's always a superior third party app (e.g., Plex / Jellyfin, Emby vs Synology Video or whatever the QNAP one is called), and my experience with Synology is that their GUI kind of gets in my way.

  3. Hello. I have an ol mini PC from my brother. ASUS J1900I-C + Integrated Intel Celeron J1900. I want to use it as a simple NAS build and I'm totally newbie) This motherboard got only 2 SATAs. Question : Can I create a separate space for OS and use remaining disk space as a NAS storage?

  4. I've got a TVS 473e and for the past 3 years it's been pretty good. My main use has been plex. But the transcoding capabilities with 4k video is left wanting. I've also stated using pi hole and pf sense along with a couple of others. Overall it's running out of breath and after looking around at higher end QNAP offerings, I refuse to pay that sort of money for what they're offering. If you want a 13th gen i5 with 8+ bays your looking at £1500+ before hard drives. DIY makes much more sense if you're on a budget and have time to mess around with it.

  5. First let me say love your content.

I have owned a QNAP TS-453B for nearly 6 years now. Almost from the start I have regretted the purchase. The main reason has been the ongoing CVE vulnerabilities.

Do a quick search of the NVD for the listing of vulnerabilities found in QTS and you will see 183 matches going back to September, 2009.

There have been 27 Critical Vulnerabilities found in the the last 2.5 years. 67 Critical's since Feb 2016. That's 1 every 42 days!!!

Synology has had half that many in the same amount of time.

Simply put their platform is risky to run. Yes I know much of this can be boiled down to user error to some degree, but not all of it.

By comparison a search for Unraid brings back just 2 CVE entries, both from 3 years ago listed as Medium to High. FreeNas/TrueNAS much the same with zero critical vulnerabilities listed and only 6 total.

Due the fact that QNAP has had 8 more Vulnerabilities including 2 listed as Critical in the last 2 months, I have finally bitten the bullet and am installing Unraid on my QNAP hardware.

I frankly regret buying this out of the box solution and wish i had built my own from scratch.

  6. Something I read that got me thinking. All these different new and better backup options vs. an old and tested RAID. While they are better for storage, are they better if you have to restore your information on the new drives in case of a failure? Because that is the most important thing in the end. Can you get it back fast safe and reliable without having to jump through hoops or being locked behind some proprietary software?

  7. I love my TVS-874. I was going to build my own server, didn't really have the time. It's all YOUR fault, you showed me just how amazing the core i5 tvs was, and I got my income tax return…. Put 8 twelve TB drives in it. Absolutely love it. Totally killer Plex server.

  8. I like Synology %
