Home Assistant Installation Tutorial: Lubuntu + VirtualBox, Reuse of Old Computers[Smart Home Series]

If you want to build your own smart home, you should be familiar with Home Assistant. This video repurposes an old laptop to install Home Assistant OS in Linux and a virtual machine. This way of installing Home Assistant gets the most complete functionality. In addition, this notebook will also have better flexibility and can be used for other purposes at the same time. The performance of this old laptop is really poor, and simple web browsing can fill up the CPU usage. When I first started Home Assistant, the CPU usage was 90~100%. After running for a period of time, while making some requests to Home Assistant, the CPU usage is stable at 10 ~ 20%. It seems that this laptop can still cope with the use of the general Home Assistant. As the operating system of the laptop, I choose Lubuntu, which is lighter than Ubuntu. The Lubuntu version uses the 20.04.3 LTS (Long Term Support) version, and the official support will be provided until April 2023. The representative said that the system will not have major updates and will be relatively stable. The virtual machine chooses VirtualBox because it is convenient, and the UI of VirtualBox is also very intuitive. In the future, I will first study the difference in performance between KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) and VirtualBox, and then make plans. 【Home Assistant installation method and function difference】 【Old laptop configuration】 Model: Lenovo G475 Processor: AMD E-450 RAM: 6 GB DDR3L 1333Mhz Storage: 500 GB HDD[Software]Lubuntu 20.04.3 LTS: Etcher: Home Assistant (VirtualBox Image): VirtualBox(Ubuntu 20.04):[Terminal command]Install gdebi: sudo apt install gdebi Install VirtualBox with gdebi: sudo gdebi[VirtualBox installation package path][Time Code]0:00 Preface 0:03 A brief introduction to Home Assistant 0:20 Briefly introduce the old laptop to be reused 1:15 Start cleaning the old laptop 1:40 Create a bootable USB stick 2:11 Install Lubuntu 3:33 Install VirtualBox 4:14 Create a virtual machine for Home Assistant 4:44 Set up the virtual machine 5:42 Initialize the Home Assistant 5:59 End #HomeAssistant #smarthome#teaching
