VMWare License Question – 2 HOSTS

Greetings,

I had 3 hosts setup and will be moving to two hosts which include buying new hardware and removing one, so will end up with two dell server hosts with 2 CPU each (production and a backup/DR copy at another site)

I’ve attached pictures of our two accounts and what we have licensed.

Since I am reducing hosts, what out of these 5 do I need to renew? Storage is local and I don’t use any special features such as vMotion, etc. I backup and replicate via Veeam.

Thank you

  1. The correct answer depends on what CPUs you plan to use now and in the future …
    If you are going for 32+ core CPUs **now**, you have to go for Foundation+Standard licenses.

    If you plan to use 32+ core CPUs (really, you should use multiples of 32 core CPUs to use the license to its fullest; e.g., 64, 96, 128, etc.) in the future, you need to run some calculations as to when you will do that and see if you save more by staying with Essentials for now and upgrading later or converting to Foundation + Standard now. Keep in mind that if you let your support lapse, you’ll have to get it reinstated for all of that lapsed time (it may be cheaper to just get new licenses depending on how long this takes) plus a penalty fee.

    TL;DR version:

    Using <=32 core CPUs now:
    VMware Essentials

    Using >32 core CPUs:
    vCenter Server Foundation + 4 vSphere Standard licenses
