“Bill Sky – The Computer Guy!”

So, some of you don’t like Linux, probably because you have never used it before or didn’t take the time to really learn it. When teaching Assembly language programming in college, I found that every single student, at the end of the semester, in my class was a complete Linux convert. You can…

  1. For anyone just starting w Linux, Arch is great for "bleeding edge" as it has a rolling release distribution model. This also can make it less stable, so be aware of that. Debian is stable, and arguably more flexible than Redhat (also rocksolid – but really found in corporate settings vs. private use). In general, most all linux distributions really just differ in the desktop environment (how it looks, how much you can or can't customize it), the package manager (how you download and install software / e.g. pacman vs apt etc) , and the last main thing I would say is what is included "out of the box" with a given distro.
So, very lightweight"small footprint" examples are Arch, and arch-based distros. Others come w software specific for a domain / for example Kali Linux which comes w a lot of software that people interested in learning security (pen testing, white hat hacking etc) might want.

  2. Maybe your not aware , but their is a lot of "bad blood" in the Linux community surrounding Centos…. which is essentially dead (the community version), so people should think twice before using that distro as their "daily driver". Btw, I fixed my cobol calculations errors with sin/cos etc. : I had an incompatible gnucobol version for my system installed. Uninstalled the "newer" version and got a 3.1.0 version that works just fine! : )
